TrendForce's recent investigation shows a change in the supply-demand situation for eight-inch wafers: against the backdrop of gradual production cuts by TSMC and Samsung, the steady growth in demand for AI-related PowerICs, along with concerns about rising IC costs and capacity constraints in the second half of the year, have led to early stockpiling. In addition to the fact that the eight-inch production capacity of mainland Chinese wafer factories has rebounded to a high level ahead of schedule, manufacturers in other regions have also received increased orders for 2026 and have adjusted their production capacities accordingly. As a result, foundries are actively considering price hikes. TSMC has begun to gradually reduce its eight-inch production capacity since 2025, with the goal of fully stopping production in some plants by 2027. Similarly, Samsung started reducing its eight-inch production in 2025 with a more aggressive approach. TrendForce predicts a decrease of approximately 0.3% in global eight-inch production capacity for 2025, leading to negative growth. Despite the plans for slight expansions in production by SMIC and UMC in 2026, it is estimated that the decrease in production capacity will increase to 2.4%. Some wafer factories are optimistic that the situation will tighten in 2026 and have already informed their customers of price increases ranging from 5-20% for foundry services.
