According to the Financial Times, the European Commission is planning to issue a formal warning to Italy regarding the "golden power rules". This legal rule grants the government special powers to protect industries such as banks and energy that are deemed to be of "vital strategic interest to the nation", preventing them from falling into the hands of entities from non-EU member states. Italy first passed this law in 2012 and then significantly expanded the industries covered by it in March 2022, citing supply chain issues exposed by the pandemic.
