Due to the high airport fees and government inaction, Ryanair will suspend all routes to the Azores Islands in March 2026.
On November 20th local time, Ryanair announced that due to the "high airport fees imposed by the French airport monopoly company ANA Airlines" and "the inaction of the Portuguese government," it will completely suspend all flights to the Azores archipelago from March 29, 2026. Ryanair stated that ANA Airlines lacks competition in Portugal, allowing them to increase airport fees to gain monopoly profits, while other EU airports are reducing fees to stimulate growth. Ryanair accused the Portuguese government of inaction and criticized them for introducing a 2 Euro travel tax and increasing air traffic control fees by 120%, while other EU countries are canceling travel taxes to protect capacity growth.
