Samsung Electronics has released the first batch of performance data for its upcoming 2nm chip technology, signaling the company's more active push towards the next generation of wafer foundry manufacturing to narrow the gap with TSMC. Samsung announced that its first generation 2nm technology utilizes Gate-All-Around (GAA) transistor technology, offering a 5% performance improvement, 8% increase in power efficiency, and a 5% reduction in chip size compared to their second generation 3nm technology. This is the first time Samsung has provided specific specifications for 2nm, as previously only conceptual descriptions were given. Currently, TSMC controls over 70% of the global wafer foundry market share, while Samsung holds approximately 7%. Most analysts expect TSMC to continue leading due to high production volumes, stability in manufacturing, and the growing demand for AI accelerators and data center chips. However, industry insiders in South Korea suggest that competition may intensify starting from the 2nm node.
