On the 14th, Taiwanese media reported that a senior US official revealed that the US has made significant progress in trade negotiations with Taiwan, and it is hoped that more trade agreements will be reached by the end of this year. However, according to the US "Politico" website, the US has demanded that Taiwan invest in the US, with the amount ranging between $350 billion from South Korea and $550 billion from Japan. The public in Taiwan is calling this a "huge demand". Chen Yi-Fan, a scholar at Tamkang University, stated that if the US demands such an amount, it would almost deplete Taiwan's foreign exchange reserves completely, which is extremely unreasonable. The Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) must carefully evaluate this. He also said that if the negotiations break down, it may not necessarily be a bad thing, as the demand clearly exceeds Taiwan's financial capacity. According to Taiwanese media reports, many netizens have strongly criticized the amount, saying it is similar to war reparations or an excessive protection fee. Many people believe that even with an investment of billions of dollars, the tariffs will only decrease from 20% to about 15%, making it not cost-effective to "spend a lot of money to save sunset industries". Some have sarcastically remarked that even the sacred mountain of Taiwan has been surrendered, and yet the US is making such large demands, criticizing the DPP for "selling out Taiwan for glory".
