American Airlines is launching an unprecedented effort to try to alleviate the travel chaos caused by the government shutdown and resume operations before the busy Thanksgiving holiday travel peak. According to aviation analysis company Cirium, the flight cancellation rate has decreased since President Trump signed legislation to reopen the government on Wednesday, and operations are expected to continue to normalize by Friday. As of Thursday morning, the cancellation rate for American Airlines is approximately 3.4%, lower than the over 10% caused by severe weather and mandatory flight reductions on November 9th. Some airlines have indicated they will resume operations without significant issues, so the Thanksgiving holiday travel season is expected to return to normal. Delta Air Lines CEO Ed Bastian stated on Wednesday that he believes operations will start to return to normal in the next few days once air traffic controllers begin to receive their salaries.
