World Trade Organization: Under the shadow of tariffs, various economies have successively introduced trade facilitation measures.
The latest G20 trade measures report released by the World Trade Organization on November 13 showed that during the period from mid-October 2024 to mid-October 2025, the trade volume affected by tariffs among G20 members increased by about four times compared to the previous reporting period, marking the largest increase in the history of WTO trade monitoring. At the same time, measures taken by members to promote trade also doubled. WTO Director-General Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala pointed out, "Despite the most severe impact on the global trade system in 80 years, trade has shown considerable resilience, and trade between most WTO members remains normal. This latest monitoring report provides new data, showing the actual situation. We see that the impact of protectionist measures on world trade is significantly increasing. At the same time, we also see many trade facilitation measures, reflecting members' desire to reduce trade costs, even as trade barriers in other regions are rising. It is gratifying to see ongoing dialogue. WTO members should seize this opportunity to make trade more stable through reform and repositioning of the WTO." WTO economists predict a global goods trade growth rate of 2.4% in 2025 and 0.5% in 2026. Trade growth in the first half of 2025 is expected to be stronger than expected, driven mainly by strong demand for artificial intelligence-related products and the continued trade growth in most WTO members, especially developing economies. The new G20 report indicates that dialogues among trade partners are increasing, and efforts are being made to seek trade solutions through negotiations.
