The US government claims that the funding source of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau is illegal.
On November 11th local time, the Trump administration in the United States has officially determined that the current funding source of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau is illegal, meaning that the agency will close after exhausting its existing funds in the coming months. This decision was disclosed in court documents released on the evening of the 10th. The documents show that the Trump administration believes that the law prohibits the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau from seeking additional funds from the Federal Reserve, which is the agency's usual source of funding. In the filed documents, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau stated that its funds can at least last until the end of this year, but it is "expected to exhaust existing funds in early 2026." Unless Congress passes a new appropriations bill, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau will face a funding shortage from next year and may not be able to carry out necessary activities.
