Domestic flights in chaos continue, American airline travel still difficult to return to normal this week.
Although people are hopeful that the US government shutdown crisis will come to an end this week, airline passengers will still face several days of domestic flight cancellations and delays, and it may be a while before flights return to normal. The Federal Aviation Administration has instructed airlines to reduce daily flights by 4% at 40 major airports since last week due to safety concerns in air traffic control. The reduction will increase to 6% on Tuesday and reach 10% on November 14th - Transportation Secretary Dafei warned that if the government does not end the shutdown, the reduction could further increase to 15% to 20%. If lawmakers agree to restore federal funding, the government may resume operations this week, but it is not clear when flight reductions will be canceled. In addition to the mandatory flight reductions, due to an increase in air traffic controllers' absenteeism, passengers must face thousands of flight delays every day. On just Saturday and Sunday alone, over 1.2 million airline passengers were affected by delays and cancellations related to air traffic. Chris Sununu, chairman of the industry organization Airlines for America, said on Monday, "The next week will still be very difficult. The FAA is still mandating flight cancellations and reductions will continue to increase this week." But he added, "Please keep your holiday plans. By Thanksgiving and Christmas, the system will be operating normally and will be feasible and flexible."
