Marty Makary, Director of the US Food and Drug Administration, announced on Monday that the agency is requiring companies that produce drugs for treating menopausal symptoms to remove warning labels from their products in order to encourage more women to take these medications. Currently, hormone replacement therapy carries so-called "black box warnings" listing potential side effects including increased risk of cardiovascular disease, blood clots, breast cancer, and dementia. These warnings are the most severe type used by the agency. Makary wrote that these warnings "inappropriately scare women away from a therapy that can change lives, and sometimes even save lives." Companies that produce hormone replacement therapy include Pfizer (PFE.N).
