According to the National Retail Federation's forecast, despite consumers remaining cautious, total holiday season spending is expected to exceed $1 trillion this year, setting a new record high. The organization said that consumers plan to spend an average of nearly $900 per person during the holiday season, with retail sales expected to increase by 3.7% to 4.2% year-on-year. "We continue to be optimistic about the holiday shopping season and expect consumers to continue seeking savings in non-essential categories in order to be able to buy gifts for family and friends," said Matthew Shay, President and CEO of the NRF, during a conference call.
