Google is launching its most powerful chip to date, aiming to compete for AI company business by offering custom silicon. The company said on Thursday that the seventh generation Tensor Processing Unit, named "Ironwood," will be publicly available in the coming weeks, after the chip was first released for testing and deployment in April of this year. This self-developed chip will be used for tasks such as processing large-scale model training, powering real-time chatbots and AI agents. Google said that by connecting up to 9,216 chips in a single computing unit, the new Ironwood TPU eliminates "the data bottleneck of the most demanding models" and provides customers with the ability to "run and scale their largest, most data-intensive models."
