The Irish government has required the compulsory confinement of poultry to contain the spread of avian flu.
The Irish government announced on the 5th that mandatory containment measures for poultry and caged birds will be implemented nationwide starting from the 10th to reduce the risk of them contracting avian influenza virus. The Irish Ministry of Agriculture, Food and the Marine said in a statement that a commercial turkey farm in County Meath has been confirmed to have an outbreak of highly pathogenic avian influenza H5N1. The day before, a commercial turkey farm in County Carlow also confirmed an outbreak of highly pathogenic avian influenza H5N1. According to multiple media reports, this is the first time since 2023 that a commercial poultry farm in Ireland has experienced an outbreak of avian influenza, resulting in the death of 3130 out of 3240 turkeys at the farm.
