Google and Amazon's tree planting and afforestation transactions have enabled a Brazilian startup to become its top carbon credit supplier.
Google has reached its largest carbon offset agreement yet, agreeing to collaborate with the Brazilian startup company Mombak to provide funding for the restoration of the Amazon rainforest. These companies told Reuters that this deal will offset 200,000 metric tons of carbon emissions. This is four times the size of the pilot purchase agreement that Google reached with Mombak in September 2024, with Mombak being Google's sole forestry carbon credit provider. Both companies declined to comment on the value of the transaction. This agreement highlights how large tech companies are exploring various ways to mitigate the impact of their significant investments in AI-powered, energy-intensive data centers on the climate, thereby driving the demand to offset carbon emissions through Brazil's emerging reforestation industry.
