After Super Micro Computer, Inc. (SMCI.US) reported better-than-expected fiscal 2027 first-quarter results and guidance, several Wall Street investment banks updated their bullish views on the AI server supplier and the industry. Institutions generally believe that AI server demand remains strong, and that component supply (including GPUs) and customer data center readiness, rather than demand, constitute the key constraints on growth; at the same time, institutions remain cautious about Super Micro Computer, Inc.'s valuation, execution credibility, cancellability of backlog orders, and litigation progress, with an overall positive but divergent view.
The earnings report showed that Super Micro Computer, Inc.'s Q1 revenue was US$19.95 billion, up 298% year-over-year and 79% quarter-over-quarter, 33% above market consensus; gross margin was 12.8%, 198 basis points above market consensus; operating profit was US$2.165 billion, and earnings per share reached US$1.81, 70% above market consensus of US$1.06.
Looking ahead, the company provided Q2 revenue guidance of US$19.5 billion to US$21.5 billion, with a midpoint of US$20.5 billion, 24% above market expectations of US$16.53 billion; EPS guidance midpoint of US$1.78, 65% above consensus of US$1.08. Fiscal 2027 revenue guidance is US$72 billion to US$82 billion, with gross margin guidance of 11.8% to 12.2%. Bernstein believes this guidance implies the company's revenue will remain near the Q1 run-rate level, while profitability will be stronger than Wall Street previously expected.
However, Bernstein remains cautious on Super Micro Computer, Inc.'s valuation and execution. The firm derived a US$42 price target based on 12x FY28 EPS of US$3.53, maintained a "Market Perform" rating, and noted that while the strong AI infrastructure demand environment continues to benefit the supply chain, concerns around management credibility and the cancellability of backlog orders may limit full revenue realization.
The firm's analyst team led by Mark C. Newman believes that the appointment of former Western Digital Corporation (WDC.US) Chief Financial Officer Mark Long as CFO is a positive development, but the company still needs to demonstrate more broad-based execution evidence before the market shifts to a more constructive view.
Bernstein also said that Super Micro Computer, Inc.'s strong results provide a positive read-across to Dell Technologies, Inc. Class C (DELL.US) and Hewlett Packard Enterprise Co. (HPE.US), and among this group the firm prefers Dell Technologies, Inc. Class C; the firm has an "Outperform" rating and US$650 price target on Dell Technologies, Inc. Class C.
Wedbush analyst Matt Bryson said in an investor note that Super Micro Computer, Inc.'s strong results and improved outlook reinforce the positive backdrop for the AI server industry and should at least partially alleviate market concerns that "financing friction could weigh on AI server spending," especially since Super Micro Computer, Inc. has signaled that the key constraint on guidance comes from component supply rather than customer demand.
Bryson noted that management mentioned shortages of key components (including even GPUs) and rising costs, a statement that should provide some relief to component stocks that have been under pressure in recent weeks due to demand concerns, benefiting Dell Technologies, Inc. Class C, Hewlett Packard Enterprise Co., and memory and other server component suppliers. Wedbush maintained its "Neutral" rating and US$40 price target on Super Micro Computer, Inc., while raising its FY27 adjusted EPS estimate from US$4.45 to US$6.43 and its FY28 estimate from US$4.48 to US$5.64.
The firm also said it is awaiting the conclusion of all litigation related to Super Micro Computer, Inc.'s GPU system shipments, and believes that until sentencing of co-founder Wally Liaw concludes, the matter will remain an overhang on the stock. It is understood that in March this year, the U.S. Department of Justice accused three individuals including Wally Liaw of assisting in smuggling at least US$2.5 billion of U.S. AI technology in violation of export laws; Willy Sun has pleaded guilty and is awaiting sentencing, Wally Liaw has pleaded not guilty, and Steven Chang remains at large.
Needham analyst N. Quinn Bolton was more positive, reiterating a "Buy" rating and US$46 price target on Super Micro Computer, Inc. He noted that Super Micro Computer, Inc.'s Q2 revenue guidance midpoint of US$20.5 billion represents only about 2.8% sequential growth from the Q1 reported base, but if using the base revenue of approximately US$17.6 billion as reference, the sequential increase is about 16.5%. The firm cited management as emphasizing that the key factor limiting the pace of growth is component availability (including GPUs) and customer data center readiness, rather than demand.
