Canadian e-commerce giant Shopify (SHOP.US) saw its shares close down 8.74% on Tuesday after reporting third-quarter results. Although earnings beat expectations and holiday-season guidance was broadly in line with market expectations, two metrics underpinning the stock's high valuationplatform transaction volume and gross profitfell short of the growth rates some institutions had bet on, becoming key factors weighing on the stock's performance.
The earnings report showed Shopify's third-quarter revenue rose 32% year-over-year to US$3.742 billion, broadly in line with market expectations; adjusted earnings per share were US$0.49, better than the market's expected US$0.46. Gross merchandise volume (GMV) rose 29.5% year-over-year to US$119.145 billion, below the market consensus of US$119.9 billion cited by Royal Bank of Canada (RBC). Gross profit rose 28% year-over-year, missing the roughly 31%32% range in Morgan Stanley strategists' latest estimates.
Holiday-season guidance was also not enough to drive a meaningful upward revision to earnings expectations. Shopify expects fourth-quarter revenue to grow by just over 30% year-over-year, with gross profit growth approaching but below 30%. Before the earnings release, Wall Street had forecast roughly 30% and 28% for the two, respectively. The company expects its free cash flow margin to be flat with the year-earlier level of about 19%. In other words, the guidance was broadly in line with consensus and did not signal a sharp deterioration in consumer spending. But based on Morgan Stanley's pre-earnings estimates, Shopify's stock at the time traded at about 60 times 2027 expected free cash flow, versus an average of about 36 times for large software companies. At such a valuation, "maintaining strong growth" and "growing strongly enough to justify a valuation upgrade" are two different thresholds.
However, JPMorgan noted in its latest research report that after the third-quarter results, the bullish thesis on Canadian e-commerce giant Shopify (SHOP.US) remains valid through 2027, although two key debates still warrant attention: 1) How will the company achieve sustained 30% revenue growth?; 2) Is the current elevated expense level only temporary?
JP Morgan said that on revenue growth, Shopify has achieved year-over-year GMV and revenue growth of more than 30% for six consecutive quarters, a performance driven by broad-based strength across merchants of different sizes, sales channels and geographic regions. Shopify continues to expand market share: its three-year compound annual growth rate (CAGR) in the U.S. online sales market reached 23%, far exceeding the 8% growth of the overall U.S. e-commerce market; meanwhile, Shopify's three-year CAGR in the European e-commerce market reached 37%, also above the 8% growth of the overall European e-commerce market.
Since the beginning of 2025, Shopify has contributed about 50% of new sales in the U.S. e-commerce market and more than 40% of new sales in the European market. By comparison, three years ago that share was about 20% in the U.S. and about 25% in Europe.
Enterprise-level business execution and transaction volume ramp remain strong, but usage varies across merchants of different sizes and across solutions, and enterprise-level business continues to drive incremental revenue growth. Given the strength across merchants of different sizes, customer groups, sales channels and geographic regions, JP Morgan remains bullish on Shopify sustaining revenue growth of more than 30% during the Black Friday-Cyber Monday (BFCM) shopping season and does not believe the company is facing macroeconomic pressure. The firm expects Shopify's fourth-quarter revenue to grow 33% (34% in constant currency) and 2027 revenue to grow 29% (29% in constant currency).
On expenses, Shopify is driving sequential declines in artificial intelligence (AI)-related costs through model selection, model distillation and caching technology; infrastructure spending is temporarily elevated through year-end; and the sequential increase in fourth-quarter marketing spending reflects a shift in spending timing after the company conducted incremental effectiveness testing in the third quarter, rather than a structural change in marketing philosophy.
More importantly, since 2026, Shopify's absolute gross profit growth has consistently outpaced operating expense growth. JP Morgan expects the company to achieve year-over-year expense leverage across all non-GAAP expense line items in 2027.
Beyond fundamentals, Shopify remains a key leader in the agentic commerce ecosystem. With more than 20 years of accumulated data, the company is positioned to become the operating system for commerce overall. AI integration continues to bring higher-converting traffic to merchants, while Sidekick helps merchants accelerate their product roadmaps.
JP Morgan detailed the core takeaways from Shopify's third-quarter earnings call, including:
1. Shopify continues to expand wallet share, with growth drivers broadly distributed
Shopify has achieved year-over-year GMV and revenue growth of more than 30% for six consecutive quarters, a performance driven by broad-based strength across merchants of different sizes, sales channels and geographic regions. Consistent with prior quarters, growth continued to be driven jointly and in balance by same-store sales (SSS) growth and new merchant acquisition.
By merchant size, merchants with annual GMV between US$2 million and US$25 million contributed the most incremental GMV, while merchants with annual GMV above US$25 million remained the fastest-growing cohort.
Enterprise-level business execution and transaction volume ramp continued to be strong; however, usage varies across merchants of different sizes and across solutions, and enterprise-level business continues to drive incremental revenue growth.
Payments penetration rose about 300 basis points year-over-year to about 68%; Shop Pay GMV grew 50% year-over-year. Advertising and other solutions also grew.
Subscription Solutions continued to benefit from strong performance of Standard and Plus plans and growth in variable platform fees. This growth came in balanced measure both from more merchants exceeding the minimum transaction volume threshold (MVT) and from continued sales growth among larger merchants.
By geographic region, benefiting from localized payment services, Shopify's European GMV grew 33% year-over-year in constant currency; meanwhile, the company continues to expand its footprint in Asian and Latin American markets.
Given the strength across merchants of different sizes, customer groups, sales channels and geographic regions, JP Morgan remains bullish on Shopify sustaining revenue growth of more than 30% during the BFCM shopping season and does not believe the company is facing macroeconomic pressure. The firm expects Shopify's fourth-quarter revenue to grow 33% (34% in constant currency) and 2027 revenue to grow 29% (29% in constant currency).
2. The profitable growth framework remains intact
Although incremental AI spending around Sidekick continues to weigh on margins year-over-year, Shopify is driving sequential cost improvement through model selection, model distillation and caching technology. Currently, merchant conversations with Sidekick rose 14% quarter-over-quarter, but cost per conversation fell 28% quarter-over-quarter, and total Sidekick costs fell 18% quarter-over-quarter. Infrastructure spending is also elevated, as Shopify is procuring computing capacity in advance for the BFCM shopping season, improving search functionality and supporting Sidekick.
Beyond infrastructure spending, on marketing, Shopify shifted some marketing spending from the third quarter to the fourth quarter. Previously, the company paused some marketing spending to conduct incremental effectiveness testing. However, Shopify's marketing strategy has not changed, and it remains committed to strict spending thresholds and discipline.
More importantly, since 2026, Shopify's absolute gross profit growth has consistently outpaced operating expense growth. JP Morgan expects the company to achieve year-over-year expense leverage across all non-GAAP expense line items in 2027. The firm expects Shopify's absolute gross profit to grow 26% year-over-year in 2027, with a free cash flow margin of 20.4%, up 150 basis points year-over-year.
3. Agentic commerce continues to bring high-converting traffic and empower merchants
Currently, merchants are focused on two practical goals that Shopify helps them achieve: 1) building the future of agentic commerce; 2) driving growth in their current online store businesses.
Shopify reiterated that it remains the commerce operating system in agentic commerce and supports this ecosystem through integrations with partners such as Muse, Instinct, Claude Duet and Grok Bot. The company is driving product discovery across all major AI channels.
Shopify's Catalog is built on more than 20 years of commerce data and currently contains more than 1 billion products. Traffic from Catalog converts at about twice the rate of ordinary AI search traffic.
Core agentic traffic grew 2.6 times year-over-year, with related order volume up 3.3 times; compared with organic search, AI-driven shoppers are about 64% more likely to complete a conversion.
Agentic commerce is continuing to expand the total addressable market (TAM). In the third quarter, about 74% of AI shopping transactions came from product categories outside the top 100.
Sidekick's daily active merchants grew 3.7 times year-over-year, with daily sessions up 4.2 times; in the third quarter, Sidekick created about 67% of all flows.
Sidekick also supports Canvas, helping merchants launch more highly personalized online stores about 20% faster.
Sidekick is helping merchants expand GMV. JP Morgan believes Shopify still has long-term pricing power, though its near-term focus remains on driving merchant growth.
Overall, given Shopify's leading advantages in AI channel distribution, Shop Pay enablement, Sidekick, Catalog and the Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP), JP Morgan continues to believe the company is well positioned in agentic commerce and is poised to become a leader in this field.
JP Morgan said Shopify remains its top pick and is included on JPMorgan's analyst focus list. The firm expects the company's 2027 revenue to grow 29%, absolute gross profit to grow 26% year-over-year, and the free cash flow (FCF) margin to reach 20.4%, up 150 basis points year-over-year.
JP Morgan reiterated its "Overweight" rating on Shopify with a December 2027 price target of US$200. The price target is based on about 23 times the company's 2028 expected gross profit of US$11.1 billion and is further supported by the firm's discounted cash flow (DCF) model. The firm expects GMV and revenue growth, combined with the company's continued cost discipline and improved operating efficiency, to drive steady expansion of operating margins and free cash flow margins.
