Citi stated that Booking Holdings' third-quarter results beat expectations, driven by strong travel demand, while its full-year guidance remained largely unchanged.
Booking Holdings (BKNG.US) delivered a better-than-expected third-quarter report: room nights, gross bookings, and adjusted EBITDA all exceeded market consensus. But alongside the beat, travel demand headwinds that persisted from late Q3 into October weighed on Q4 guidanceby Citi's comparison, both Q4 room night and gross bookings guidance came in below sell-side consensus, and adjusted EBITDA growth guidance was only "roughly flat year over year." Citi reiterated its "Buy" rating on Booking Holdings with a price target of US$236. Results: Bookings and EBITDA both beat consensus Specifically, Q3 room nights rose 6.8% year over year to 345 million, clearly outpacing the company's own guidance range of 3%-5% year-over-year growth and exceeding consensus by about 1%. Gross bookings were US$54.5 billion, up 11% year over year on a constant-currency basis, beating consensus by about 4%. Revenue needs to be viewed on two bases: excluding the US$900 million charge related to the US Federal Trade Commission (FTC) matter, adjusted revenue was US$9.8 billion, up 8.7% year over year on a constant-currency basis, corresponding to an 18% monetization rate and beating consensus by about 3%; including that charge, total revenue was US$8.9 billion. On the profit side, adjusted EBITDA was US$4.6 billion at a 47% margin, beating consensus by about 3%. Booking mix: Strong air, soft car rentals By segment, the three booking metrics showed clear divergence. Room nights of 345 million were the core support for the overall beat; air tickets booked were 23 million, up 19.4% year over year and sharply beating consensus by about 8%Citi analysts believe this growth rate "may be above the industry average." In contrast, car rental days were 21 million, down 0.7% year over year and about 2% below consensus, the only one of the three metrics to underperform. Q4 guidance below consensus, full-year guidance largely unchanged Guidance is the weak spot of this earnings report. The company expects Q4 room nights to grow only 1%-3% year over year; gross bookings to grow 4%-6% on a constant-currency basis, below consensus of 7.1% year-over-year growth; revenue to grow 2%-4% on a constant-currency basis, below consensus of about 7%; and adjusted EBITDA to be "roughly flat" year over year. Citi noted that both Q4 room night and gross bookings guidance came in below consensus expectations. On a full-year basis, 2026 guidance was "largely maintained": gross bookings kept at high-single-digit (HSD) growth on a constant-currency basis; revenue growth guidance was raised from "mid-to-high single digit" to "high single digit" (constant-currency basis); and adjusted EBITDA growth (high single digit) and adjusted EPS growth (low-to-mid teens) guidance were both unchanged. Five focus points for the earnings call: AI strategy tops the list Citi emphasized that market attention remains focused on Booking's AI strategythe company has already rolled out Lola, Vayo, and the horizontal agent Muse, among others. Citi listed five focus points for the earnings call: first, progress and vision for the generative AI strategy, including Lola, Vayo, Penny, and the newer horizontal agent Muse; second, Q3 travel demand trends, regional strengths and weaknesses (especially the European market, given concerns stemming from Middle East conflicts), and trend clues for Q4; third, direct channel traffic share and "Connected Trip" penetration; fourth, demand for alternative accommodations and supply build-out in the US market; fifth, 2027 profitability trends, including the benefit from the company's US$100 million in incremental cost savings. Valuation and rating: Reiterate Buy, price target US$236 Citi reiterated its Buy rating on Booking Holdings with a price target of US$236. Under Citi's rating system, a Buy rating corresponds to an expected total return of no less than 15% over the next 12 months. The price target is based on 19x Citi's 2027 expected P/E, multiplied by Citi's forecast 2027 GAAP EPS of US$12.40. Based on the November 3 share price of US$155.67, this implies an expected price return of 51.6%, plus an expected dividend yield of 1.1%, for an expected total return of 52.7%, far above the Buy rating threshold; the company's market capitalization is approximately US$116.967 billion. For the 19x target multiple, Citi's rationale is: Booking's consistent execution, the benefits from continued progress on its Payments, Loyalty, and "Connected Trip" strategies, and continuously expanding margins. Risk warnings Citi also listed risks that could prevent the stock from reaching the price target: first, a slower-than-expected recovery in travel activity; second, declines in monetization rate and adjusted EBITDA margin as the company expands beyond its core European accommodations business; third, the risk of earnings estimate cuts due to currency headwinds; fourth, sustained impact on the global travel market from exogenous market shocks (including events similar to the COVID-19 pandemic).
