Eddie Yue: It is time to re-examine whether the conventions followed in the past remain effective, so as to enhance market resilience.
Eddie Yue, Chief Executive of the Hong Kong Monetary Authority, said it is time to re-examine whether the conventions that have been known and followed in the past remain effective, and to pay closer attention to potential threats and missing elements in the market, as well as how to respond to risks and attacks that have accumulated in the market.
HKMA Chief Executive Eddie Yue said in his address at the Global Financial Leaders' Investment Summit that it is time to re-examine whether the conventions that have been well understood and followed in the past remain effective, and to pay closer attention to potential threats and missing elements in the market, as well as how to respond to risks and attacks that have accumulated in the market.
Eddie Yue pointed out that if multiple risks erupt simultaneously at the most unfavorable moment, how should they be dealt with. By re-examining the risk landscape, the market will have a greater chance of avoiding or mitigating shocks, or even seizing new opportunities brought about by changes, creating and preserving value for investors and society.
He said that in recent years the world has faced increasing military conflicts, changes in trade policy, supply chain restructuring, rising public debt, active efforts by various places to suppress inflation, and a constantly changing technological environment including AI, yet the global financial system has continued to remain sound. However, at the same time, more and more concerns have emerged in the market, worrying whether the current situation is too good to be true, causing all sectors to become complacent. Although the final outcome remains to be verified over time, financial market participants have no room to wait, because their thoughts and actions will affect future development.
