Hong Kong Chief Secretary for Administration Chan Kwok-ki said that in the past Friday to Sunday, total visitor arrivals to Hong Kong were about 600,000, up 34% year on year, of which mainland and non-mainland visitors accounted for about 470,000 and 130,000 respectively. On Saturday and Sunday, the number of Hong Kong residents and visitors using the Lok Ma Chau Control Point for immigration clearance each exceeded 150,000, setting a new record.
Chan Kwok-ki said on his social media page that multiple major events have been held in succession in Hong Kong, including the Hong Kong Wine & Dine Festival at the Central Harbourfront, a large-scale concert at Kai Tak Sports Park, and the Halloween atmosphere, making the city bustling with activity. Industry sources reported that the series of events drove the overall business volume of the bar industry up by 30% to 50% year on year over the past two weekends. As for the Hong Kong Wine & Dine Festival, it attracted more than 171,000 admissions, up more than 5% year on year, with business volume up about 8% year on year.
He said these figures show that mega events not only boost the atmosphere but also convert visitor flows into consumption, business opportunities and economic momentum, truly achieving "both popularity and prosperity."
He mentioned that from midnight to 2 a.m. on November 1, more than 20,000 people used the Lok Ma Chau Control Point for departure, setting a historic high. With all departments on full alert and advance deployment, all lanes, self-service channels and counters were opened before the peak to ease the flow of people and vehicles. The Hong Kong Transport and Logistics Bureau has maintained communication with the transport industry, adding overnight express routes from Central direct to Lok Ma Chau, making Global Top E-Commerce largely smooth.
Chan Kwok-ki thanked frontline colleagues of the departments, and also thanked mainland authorities for agreeing to extend the clearance hours of the Shenzhen Bay Control Point to facilitate visitors, fully demonstrating the determination and collaborative effectiveness of the two places in jointly easing cross-boundary visitor flows. He said the SAR government will review experience with all sectors, continuously optimize arrangements and cross-boundary collaboration, and use mega events to promote tourism, tourism to drive consumption, and consumption to invigorate the economy, further promoting the prosperous development of all industries in Hong Kong.
