Text:
Public data shows that in the first nine months of 2026, China's auto exports to the EU reached as high as 1.83 million units, already far exceeding the full-year total of last year. In September alone, monthly and cumulative year-on-year figures surged 128% and 87%, respectively. China's auto exports to the EU show overall characteristics of scale leap and extreme structural divergence, and the global rise of China's auto industry is becoming increasingly evident. The powertrain landscape of China's auto exports to the EU is changing rapidly. In 2026, plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) became the strongest engine, with exports soaring 372%; battery electric vehicles (BEVs) still achieved nearly twofold growth despite heavy high-tariff pressure; and hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs), as a stable defense line, jumped 91%. The Matthew effect among automakers is prominent: BYD Company Limited leads by a wide margin, while Geely, Chery, Leapmotor and others are racing ahead at high speed. Chinese mainstream automakers are performing extremely prominently in the European market, proving their strong growth through both internal and external strengths.
Overall trend of Chinese automakers' exports to the EU
Public data shows that Chinese automakers' exports to the EU are generally showing explosive growth. The 2026 export volume is far above previous years, averaging more than 200,000 units per month in the first nine months, and in September it soared to 279,000 units, a record high. Despite facing the EU's high anti-subsidy tariff barriers, Chinese autos, relying on strong supply chain advantages and product competitiveness, have not been contained but instead achieved a strong counter-trend breakthrough.
In 2026, China's auto exports to the EU show explosive, non-linear leapfrog growth. Cumulative exports from January to September reached 1.83 million units, up 87% year on year, already far exceeding the full-year 2025 total of 1.38 million units. In particular, exports in September alone reached 279,000 units, surging 128% year on year and jumping 29% month on month, setting a record high.
Destination flows of passenger vehicle exports to the EU
According to our statistics on passenger vehicle export flows, for the few manufacturers that did not report data, we used sales statistics from EU internal retail as a substitute. Overall, in 2026 Chinese passenger vehicle exports to the EU show explosive leapfrog growth. Exports in the first nine months far exceeded the same periods of 2024 and 2025, and in September alone they approached 300,000 units, setting a record high. The momentum of China's passenger vehicle exports is unstoppable.
In 2026, China's passenger vehicle exports to the EU show explosive growth with both volume and price rising. From January to September, customs data show total exports of 1.785 million units, already far exceeding the full-year 2025 total of 1.315 million units. In September alone, they reached 274,000 units, surging nearly 1.5 times year on year.
The public data we aggregate from various sources are gradually approaching customs data. Our 2026 passenger vehicle exports accounted for 94%-106% of total customs passenger vehicle exports, basically reflecting the industry situation. At the same time, the trends of our multi-source data and customs data are gradually converging, indicating that statistics on Chinese automakers' overseas flows are becoming increasingly accurate. Due to the rise of Chinese automakers in the EU, overseas data that were not previously broken out have been effectively captured, and thus previous statistical deviations have been largely eliminated.
Analysis of passenger vehicle exports by major automakers
Based on our aggregation of multi-source data, Chinese automakers' exports to the EU in 2026 show a pattern of explosive growth at the top and tiered divergence.
Top automakers lead by an absolute margin: BYD Company Limited's 2026 exports reached 675,000 units, surging 295% year on year, firmly ranking first; Chery followed with 270,000 units (+214%); SAIC Motor Passenger Vehicle still had 268,000 units, but growth slowed to 20%, clearly the most affected by tariffs. New forces and dark horses racing ahead: GEELY AUTO growth reached as high as 991%, leading all mainstream automakers; Leapmotor (+427%) and XPeng (+172%) performed impressively. GAC Aion (+1018%), GAC Trumpchi (+1045%) and others also showed explosive catch-up.
BEV exports to the EU
Based on multi-source data on battery electric passenger vehicle exports to the EU, in 2026 Chinese automakers present a fierce competitive landscape of "top players leading by a wide margin, the second tier undergoing frantic reshuffling, and the tail accelerating consolidation."
1.
Top landscape: BYD Company Limited holds an absolute cliff-edge lead. BYD Company Limited's 2026 BEV exports reached 267,000 units (+185%), 4.5 times that of second-place Tesla (59,000 units). GEELY AUTO performed extremely impressively, with BEV exports reaching 44,000 units, growth as high as 438%, jumping to third place, demonstrating extremely strong BEV product momentum.
2.
Tier divergence: SAIC under pressure, Leapmotor rising. SAIC Motor Passenger Vehicle's BEV exports were 61,000 units, growth only 53%, clearly hit by the EU's highest tariff and lacking growth momentum. Meanwhile, LEAPMOTOR (+444%) and XPeng (+172%), as representatives of the new forces, both exceeded 30,000 units in BEV exports, successfully gaining a foothold in the EU market. GAC Aion even showed explosive growth of 993%.
PHEV exports to the EU
Based on multi-source data on plug-in hybrid (including extended-range) exports to the EU, in 2026 this segment shows explosive leapfrog growth and extreme "winner-takes-all" characteristics.
Total volume soaring, PHEVs become the absolute main force for breaking through. In 2026, total PHEV exports to the EU reached as high as 654,000 units, surging 372% year on year. This confirms that under the EU's high tariff barriers on BEVs, PHEVs have become the core "safe harbor" for Chinese automakers to maintain incremental growth in Europe.
The top landscape shows BYD Company Limited dominating. BYD Company Limited (406,000 units, +426%), relying on its strong PHEV technology matrix, achieved a wide lead in the EU; Chery, relying on deep cultivation of overseas channels, firmly held second place.
Divergence between new forces and traditional automakers. Geely (82,000 units) performed steadily relying on models such as Lynk & Co. Leapmotor (+310%), as a representative of the new forces, rapidly increased volume. However, SAIC Motor Passenger Vehicle (+38%) was clearly lacking momentum in this segment, showing a product mismatch among traditional automakers in PHEV exports.
HEV exports to the EU
Based on HEV export data to the EU and aggregated local data, in 2026 HEV exports to the EU show a pattern of steady overall expansion, SAIC Motor Passenger Vehicle dominating alone, and Chery rising abruptly.
In 2026, total HEV exports to the EU reached 184,000 units, up 91% year on year. Against the backdrop of BEVs suppressed by heavy tariffs and PHEVs facing the risk of tariff expansion, HEVs, with their characteristics of "no need to charge and extremely low fuel consumption," have become an important supplementary force for Chinese automakers to stabilize their European fuel vehicle base.
SAIC Motor Passenger Vehicle occupied an absolutely dominant position with 131,000 units, but its growth rate was relatively moderate (+42%). This shows the MG brand's deep foundation in Europe's fuel vehicle/hybrid vehicle market, and its HEV product line is a stable defense line against tariff shocks.
Follow-up by Japanese joint ventures. Joint venture brands such as Dongfeng Honda and GAC Honda are also exporting HEV models to Europe through their domestic bases, using their technical accumulation in the hybrid field to take a share.
