As global demand surges, US energy companies expect natural gas production to hit a record high in 2026.
U.S. Energy Corp. companies expect 2026 to mark a second consecutive record year for natural gas production, as global demand for LNG exports and fuel to power hyperscale data centers continues to grow. The three largest U.S. natural gas producersExpand Energy (EXE.US), EQT (EQT.US) and Range Resources (RRC.US)released third-quarter results on Tuesday. All three have said spending in 2026 will be roughly flat or lower than last year while producing more gas from underground, positioning them to capture rising demand as new LNG export capacity and data center power needs reshape the U.S. Energy Corp. landscape. To maintain its dominance in the U.S. natural gas market, EQT, the country's second-largest gas producer, announced on Monday that it will acquire Range Resources in an all-stock deal valued at $13 billion, creating the largest natural gas producer in the United States. On an annual basis, the U.S. Energy Corp. Information Administration (EIA) said U.S. natural gas production is expected to rise from a record 107.6 billion cubic feet per day (bcfd) in 2025 to 112.2 bcfd in 2026, and reach 116.1 bcfd in 2027. "Most of that (incremental growth) comes from associated gas in the Permian Basin and from the Haynesville," said Matthew Bernstein, vice president of North American oil and gas at energy research and consulting firm Rystad Energy. The Permian Basin spans eastern New Mexico and West Texas, while the Haynesville straddles northwestern Louisiana and East Texas. Bernstein said gas production growth in the Permianthe largest oil-producing shale basin in the U.S.is accompanying rising crude output. According to an EIA outlook, with supply disruptions from the Iran war expected to push U.S. crude spot prices to a four-year high in 2026, U.S. Energy Corp. companies are drilling more crude (and natural gas) to help supply fuel to the world. Meanwhile, according to EIA data, total U.S. natural gas demand will rise from a record 116.5 bcfd in 2025 to 120.0 bcfd in 2026, driven mainly by a 17% surge in LNG exports. Imports from Canada provide the additional gas needed to meet U.S. demand and exports. One billion cubic feet of natural gas is enough to supply about 5 million U.S. homes for a day. Record Production Ahead According to LSEG estimates, Expand Energy, currently the largest natural gas producer in the U.S., reported third-quarter adjusted net income of $338 million, above expectations and above adjusted net income of $234 million in the same period last year. For the full year, Expand said in its second-quarter results released in July that it plans to invest about $2.75 billion to $2.95 billion in 2026 to produce about 7.4 to 7.6 billion cubic feet equivalent per day (bcfed) of natural gas, compared with average production of 7.2 bcfed in 2025 at a similar level of spending. EQT said earlier this year that it had lowered its 2026 maintenance capital expenditure guidance by $25 million to a range of $2.04 billion to $2.19 billion, and raised its full-year production guidance by 0.25 bcfed to an average of 6.5 to 6.7 bcfed. By comparison, the company spent about $2.324 billion in 2025 and averaged 6.5 bcfed of production. EQT and Range said the combined company's net production will exceed 9 billion cubic feet equivalent per day. The two companies expect the transaction to close in the first quarter of 2027.
