A positive profit alert forecasting net profit growth of over 400%, yet the share price fell 12.5% instead good news and the share price moving in "opposite directions." Has PANGAEA CONNECT (01473) fallen short of expectations, or is this "good news priced in"?
It is understood that on October 12, PANGAEA CONNECT issued a positive profit alert, expecting revenue growth of over 80% for the six months ended September 30, 2026, with unaudited consolidated profit attributable to shareholders of not less than HK$80 million, a year-on-year increase of over 400%. The earnings growth was mainly driven by growth in sales orders as the company fulfilled and delivered a large volume of 200Gb/s indium phosphide photodiode (PD) products.
Benefiting from continued growth in global AI-related demand, as of July 2026, the total value of the company's sales contracts on hand had further increased to approximately US$1.15 billion. It currently delivers about 15 million PD units per month, and this delivery volume is expected to increase further in the second half of the current fiscal year and the next fiscal year. The company's revenue has maintained a growth trend for five consecutive fiscal years, and profit for three consecutive fiscal years.
In the capital market, PANGAEA CONNECT's share price opened higher on the positive earnings news but then fell, closing down 12.5%. In fact, over a longer period, the company began a bull market in July 2025, with the share price continuing to surge. On May 18, 2026, the share price nearly tripled in just ten trading days, after which it entered high-level consolidation. As of now, the cumulative gain over the period still exceeds 10x. With good news priced in at a high level, how much further can the company go?
Strong earnings growth, structural upgrading boosts profitability
It is understood that PANGAEA CONNECT supplies a comprehensive portfolio of optoelectronic and semiconductor components, including integrated circuits, lasers, photodiodes (PD) and related devices, which enable electrical-to-optical and optical-to-electrical signal conversion within high-speed optical 800G/1.6T/3.2T modules used in AI data center applications and optical interconnects. The company has identified opportunities in the AI industry and increased its bets on AI-adjacent areas, such as optical components for AI data infrastructure.
The company's earnings growth is strong. From fiscal 2024 to fiscal 2026, revenue grew by 15.48%, 53.77% and 4.77%, respectively, with a forecast increase of 80% for the first half of fiscal 2027. Net profit attributable to shareholders turned positive starting in fiscal 2025, and is forecast to grow by over 419.5% in the first half of fiscal 2027, with profit exceeding the combined net profit of the previous two full fiscal years. The quality of this earnings inflection point is evident.
Data source: Company financial reports and announcements
The sharp earnings increase in this profit alert was mainly due to two reasons: First, a shift in product mix. The company has closely followed AI trends and accelerated its upgrade toward supplying optoelectronic and semiconductor components in recent years. The 200Gb/s indium phosphide PD has stepped onto the stage amid the volume ramp of 800G/1.6T/3.2T optical modules for AI data centers (the speed specifications of the new generation of high-speed optical interconnects). The share of high-value-added products has risen, driving the gross margin center upward. Second, economies of scale have emerged. Delivery volume has ramped up to about 15 million units per month, optimizing the expense ratio under operating leverage, while the contribution from the high-power industrial laser business is increasing daily, further improving the overall profit margin.
PANGAEA CONNECT has seen new growth variables emerge. The company recently signed an exclusive supply agreement for high-power laser light source systems with a leading domestic and global manufacturer of printed circuit board (PCB) laser drilling equipment. The products are used in the production of high-layer-count high-density interconnect (HDI) and ultra-HDI boards, with deliveries having begun in October 2026. It is expected to deliver no fewer than 500 units and generate no less than US$55 million in revenue in the current fiscal year.
This business is expected to create a new growth pole for the company. As demand for bandwidth in hyperscale AI systems grows daily, the industry is accelerating its transition to 1.6T and 3.2T interconnect hardware. As the AI infrastructure investment cycle advances, demand for high-speed and high-precision laser processing (including micro-drilling, fine-line circuit structuring and other precision processes) is expected to grow accordingly. In addition, the company's transimpedance amplifier (TIA, an amplification chip used in the optical signal conversion process) is undergoing customer certification, and its CW laser (continuous-wave laser) has entered the sample testing stage.
Order book exceeds US$1.1 billion, valuation trend yet to be validated
As is well known, most Hong Kong stocks suffer from a lack of trading liquidity, and "storytelling" has become an important strategy for small- and mid-cap names with no or little trading volume to boost trading activity and manage market value.
PANGAEA CONNECT listed on the Hong Kong stock market in 2021, but declining performance led to a continuous downtrend in valuation. It was not until March 2025 that the company kicked off a reversal with a positive profit alert on turning profitable. In July of the same year, it raised funds through a placing directed at the AI sector. Driven by the new earnings growth story, the market also voted enthusiastically, and after trading volume expanded, a valuation uptrend cycle began. In 2026, the company's orders experienced explosive growth, and its valuation accelerated upward.
In January of this year, the company announced sales orders totaling more than US$280 million, and its market value rose more than 30% that month. In June, it announced total orders exceeding US$1 billion, but the market had anticipated this, with consecutive sharp gains in both May and June, totaling a 232.7% increase. July-August saw high-level adjustment, and September started moving north again. As of now, the company's share price has risen 2.64x this year, and more than 10x since July 2025.
In addition, with the rotation-driven speculation in AI concepts, the Hong Kong listing of ChiNext's Zhongji Innolight has kept the AI optical interconnect concept high. Chairman Feng Ruijiang disclosed two increases in holdings in July and September, and at the end of August, an institution entered at about HK$1.15. These "real money" signals, combined with the long-standing lack of investment bank coverage, boosted market confidence.
However, earnings remain the biggest core variable for valuation. PANGAEA CONNECT is expected to maintain high growth in the second half of fiscal 2027, mainly supported by approximately US$1.15 billion in unfinished orders, guidance that monthly PD deliveries will "further increase," and a revenue commitment of no less than US$55 million for laser light source systems, which together form the fundamental base for the second half and the next fiscal year. In addition, if TIA certification is completed and CW lasers move from testing to mass production, the product portfolio is expected to shift from single-point PD volume growth to multi-point blossoming, entering a diversified driver model.
It is worth noting that the company's profit margin is not high but is on an upward trend, with considerable room for improvement. From fiscal 2024 to fiscal 2026, gross margin and net margin attributable to shareholders were only 8.45%, 10.39%, 10.9% and -2.1%, 1.16%, 1.86%, respectively, with a forecast of over 4.22% for the first half of fiscal 2027. The company's cash flow is not abundant, with an asset-liability ratio of 69.3% in fiscal 2026 and cash equivalents of HK$97 million.
Overall, the divergence between this sharp interim earnings increase and market value is actually short-term profit-taking pressure at a high share price after earnings were realized. The company's AI optical interconnect logic has moved from the storytelling stage to the "delivering the homework" stage. With US$1.15 billion in orders on hand, equivalent to 4x fiscal 2026 revenue and 5.7x its current market value, and monthly orders still growing, whether the valuation can be further re-rated depends on the sustainability of delivery execution.
On one side is the high certainty of rising orders, revenue and profitability; on the other is the reality of short-term high levels and high volatility. Whether the valuation can maintain its upward trend remains to be verified one by one through the full interim results and full-year fiscal 2027 results.
