Applied Digital (APLD.US) quarterly results beat expectations but stock performance was flat; Wall Street remains bullish on growth prospects; Wells Fargo & Company raises price target to $55.
Wall Street analysts are broadly bullish on Applied Digital's long-term growth prospects, believing that as demand for artificial intelligence and high-performance computing continues to grow, the company is poised to achieve further development by expanding its data center scale.
Data center operator Applied Digital (APLD.US) reported quarterly results that beat market expectations, but failed to significantly boost investor confidence, with the stock falling more than 1.8% on Thursday. Despite the lackluster share price performance, Wall Street analysts remain broadly bullish on the company's long-term growth prospects, believing that as demand for artificial intelligence (AI) and high-performance computing (HPC) continues to grow, Applied Digital is poised to achieve further development by expanding its data center scale.
The earnings report showed that Applied Digital's first-quarter revenue reached $341.9 million, up 322.5% year-over-year; adjusted loss per share was $0.01, $0.29 better than market expectations, with both revenue and profitability exceeding analyst forecasts.
Wells Fargo & Company said that Applied Digital's development and commercialization progress on its remaining 1.4 gigawatts of data center capacity remains in line with expectations, and therefore raised its price target on the stock from $50 to $55. The bank expects Applied Digital to sign approximately another 250 megawatts of data center lease agreements before the end of the year, with lease pricing on new contracts expected to be about 15% higher than the company's initial lease agreements. This means that as AI computing demand grows, the company could not only expand its leased scale but also potentially earn higher rental income.
However, U.S. investment bank Needham believes that the magnitude by which Applied Digital beat expectations this time was relatively limited. The firm noted that the company is currently marketing approximately 1.3 gigawatts of data center capacity to potential customers, most of which is not expected to come online until 2028.
Needham also said that the revenue beat this quarter was largely driven by one-time data center fit-out construction service revenue, rather than being entirely driven by growth in recurring rental income. However, the company's base rental income from high-performance computing data centers also came in better than expected, indicating that its core leasing business continues to maintain growth momentum.
By contrast, securities research firm Craig-Hallum is more optimistic about Applied Digital's long-term development prospects. The firm maintained its "Buy" rating on the stock with a price target of $79, and believes the company is gradually building a large-scale data center operating enterprise.
Craig-Hallum said: "We continue to firmly believe that Applied Digital is building a massive enterprise, and its expansion approach is predictable and replicable."
The firm noted that Applied Digital continues to lead the industry in data center site selection, customer contract signing, facility design, and infrastructure construction, while improving the efficiency of project construction and expansion through a more standardized development model.
As the scale of the company's data center project pipeline continues to expand, Craig-Hallum believes that this standardized, replicable development model will help Applied Digital continue to expand its business scale in the coming years and seize opportunities brought by growing demand for AI computing infrastructure.
However, Applied Digital's growth prospects still depend on whether new data centers can be built on schedule and whether subsequent lease agreements can be signed smoothly. Although the short-term stock price failed to strengthen on the earnings beat, institutions such as Wells Fargo & Company and Craig-Hallum still believe that the company's growing data center project pipeline will provide support for future revenue growth.
