MongoDB (MDB.US) shares plunged over 25% on Monday after the company's CEO, Chirantan "CJ" Desai, abruptly departed to join Meta Platforms (META.US) to lead its newly created enterprise platform business. Desai will serve as Meta's newly established Chief Enterprise Platform Officer, reporting directly to Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg. Prior to joining MongoDB, Desai held an executive role at ServiceNow (NOW.US). In response, MongoDB's board appointed Dev Ittycheria as interim President and CEO. The board has initiated a formal search process for a permanent successor and has engaged an executive search firm to assist. Ittycheria previously served as MongoDB's President and CEO from 2014 to 2025. "I am honored to return to the role of President and CEO of MongoDB," said Ittycheria. "I had the privilege of leading this company for more than a decade and helping to build MongoDB into the global enterprise it is today. I know the company, its employees, and its customers extremely well, and I am confident in the opportunities ahead. I look forward to working with the leadership team and the thousands of talented employees around the world to move quickly, execute with focus, and continue delivering exceptional value to our customers." Board Chairman Tom Killalea added: "He knows this company deeply, has been an actively engaged board member over the past year, and will step in immediately to ensure a smooth transition." MongoDB reiterated its guidance for the third quarter and the full 2027 fiscal year.
