NVIDIA Corporation (NVDA.US) Invests Another $1.5 Billion in SB Energy Ahead of IPO, Bringing Cumulative Investment to $3 Billion
NVIDIA Corporation will further increase its bet on SB Energy Inc., a data center infrastructure provider backed by SoftBank Group, ahead of the company's U.S. initial public offering (IPO), with plans to invest an additional $1.5 billion, bringing its cumulative investment in SB Energy to $3 billion.
NVIDIA Corporation (NVDA.US) will further increase its bet on SB Energy Inc., a data center infrastructure provider backed by SoftBank Group, ahead of the company's U.S. initial public offering (IPO), planning to invest an additional $1.5 billion, bringing its cumulative investment in SB Energy to $3 billion.
According to a regulatory filing submitted on Monday, NVIDIA Corporation has agreed to purchase newly issued Class N non-voting shares of SB Energy through a private placement, with a subscription price per share equivalent to 90% of SB Energy's final IPO offering price, representing a 10% discount to the IPO price.
Upon completion of the transaction, NVIDIA Corporation, as the world's largest artificial intelligence chip manufacturer, will have invested a cumulative $3 billion in SB Energy. This investment is also the latest in a series of recent AI industry investments by NVIDIA Corporation. With its AI chip business generating massive cash flow and financial resources, the company with the world's highest market capitalization is further channeling capital into data centers, computing infrastructure, and other segments of the AI industry chain through equity investments and other means, in order to drive the development of a broader AI ecosystem.
SB Energy, meanwhile, hopes to enter the capital markets by riding the global AI infrastructure construction boom. As major technology companies and AI firms continue to expand their computing deployments, the power, land, and infrastructure resources needed for data centers have become important bottlenecks in the expansion of the AI industry, and companies capable of providing large-scale data center infrastructure have consequently attracted capital market attention.
Currently, SB Energy already has data center facilities with a total scale of 8.8 gigawatts (GW) that are either contracted or under construction, including projects located in Texas and Ohio in the United States.
NVIDIA Corporation's additional $1.5 billion investment in SB Energy ahead of its listing also highlights its bet on continued growth in demand for AI data center infrastructure. For NVIDIA Corporation, expanding investment in data center infrastructure companies also carries clear industrial synergy significance. As demand for AI model training and inference continues to increase, bringing more data centers into operation means further expansion of potential demand for GPUs and related AI computing equipment. Therefore, by investing in data centers and other AI infrastructure companies, NVIDIA Corporation is also further strengthening its connection with the entire AI computing ecosystem.
It is worth noting that SB Energy's backers also include ChatGPT developer OpenAI, which itself is also preparing for an IPO. This means SB Energy has already secured funding support from two of the most closely watched companies in the AI industry chain, NVIDIA Corporation and OpenAI, while also being backed by SoftBank Group.
NVIDIA Corporation's additional investment comes at a time when the AI industry's demand for power and data center resources continues to climb. As technology giants keep increasing AI capital expenditures, industry competition has gradually extended from core chips such as GPUs to data centers, power supply, and other infrastructure areas.
SB Energy, with 8.8 GW of contracted or under-construction data center projects, is trying to leverage this trend to enter the U.S. capital markets. And NVIDIA Corporation's move to raise its cumulative investment in the company to $3 billion before the IPO further strengthens the ties between the two sides in the AI infrastructure sector.
