National Energy Administration: August total electricity consumption reached 1,033.2 billion kWh, up 1.7% year-on-year.

On September 20, data from the National Energy Administration showed that in August 2026, total electricity consumption across society exceeded one trillion again, reaching 1,033.2 billion kWh, up 1.7% year-on-year; the electricity load hit a record high of 1.56 billion kW, 49.69 million kW higher than the maximum load of the previous year, with a total of 7 days exceeding the previous year's maximum load. From the perspective of electricity consumption by industry, primary industry electricity consumption was 16.9 billion kWh, up 2.7% year-on-year. Secondary industry electricity consumption was 612.4 billion kWh, up 2.4% year-on-year; among this, industrial electricity consumption was 606.5 billion kWh, up 2.7% year-on-year, and electricity consumption in high-tech and equipment manufacturing maintained a relatively fast growth momentum, reaching 122.2 billion kWh, up 7.2% year-on-year. Electricity consumption grew relatively fast in computer and communication equipment (7.5%), automobile manufacturing (7.6%, of which complete new energy vehicles 22.2%), general equipment manufacturing (7.6%), special-purpose equipment manufacturing (8.2%), and electrical machinery (12.3%). Tertiary industry electricity consumption was 215.5 billion kWh, up 5.1% year-on-year; among this, electricity consumption in the charging and battery-swapping service industry and internet data services grew strongly, at 17.2 billion and 10.2 billion kWh respectively, with growth rates reaching 51.2% and 37.9% respectively. Urban and rural residential electricity consumption was 188.3 billion kWh, down 4.0% year-on-year. The main reason for the decline was that in August 2026 there were more typhoons and heavy rainfall than in August 2025, and air-conditioning electricity consumption decreased noticeably. From January to August, cumulative electricity consumption across society was 7,173.0 billion kWh, up 4.3% year-on-year. From the perspective of electricity consumption by industry, primary industry electricity consumption was 104.6 billion kWh, up 3.3% year-on-year. Secondary industry electricity consumption was 4,529.7 billion kWh, up 4.4% year-on-year; among this, industrial electricity consumption was 4,488.0 billion kWh, up 4.6% year-on-year, and electricity consumption in high-tech and equipment manufacturing was 845.1 billion kWh, up 9.3% year-on-year. Tertiary industry electricity consumption was 1,425.6 billion kWh, up 7.1% year-on-year; among this, electricity consumption in the charging and battery-swapping service industry and internet data services was 114.7 billion and 69.5 billion kWh respectively, with growth rates reaching 55.1% and 42.5% respectively. Urban and rural residential electricity consumption was 1,113.2 billion kWh, up 0.3% year-on-year.
