Despite rising energy bills, UK retail sales unexpectedly grew in August as warm weather and improved national sentiment spurred spending. The Office for National Statistics said Friday that UK retail sales rose 0.5% month-on-month in August, after falling 0.5% in July. Economists had expected a decline of 0.2% on average.
By category, clothing, food and department store goods sales were the main drivers, helping offset the drag from lower fuel sales. Rising oil prices prompted Britons to cut back on driving.
The data is undoubtedly a shot in the arm for UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham. He took office in July and promised to improve living standards in "every postcode." So far, UK consumers have remained resilient in the face of the Iranian energy shock, with sunny weather, healthy savings buffers and government announcements of cost-of-living support providing important support.
However, this period of optimism is nearing its end. Bank of England officials voted Thursday to keep interest rates unchanged at 3.75%, but hinted that rate hikes may be needed if the Middle East conflict persists. Meanwhile, employers are cutting jobs, and energy prices are expected to jump 25% in January next year, potentially pushing inflation above 4%.
Burnham's tone also shifted markedly this week, acknowledging that the first budget to be submitted next month will be "challenging."
