Finnish network equipment manufacturer Nokia Oyj Sponsored ADR (NOK.US) announced that the global commercialization of its AI-RAN (Artificial Intelligence Radio Access Network) technology is accelerating significantly, while its UK defense business has made new progress. Boosted by this news, as of press time, Nokia Oyj Sponsored ADR rose nearly 6% in Wednesday's US pre-market trading.
Nokia Oyj Sponsored ADR stated that AI-RAN technology is gaining increasing momentum globally. Currently, major telecom operators across North America, Europe, Asia-Pacific, and the Middle East are advancing AI-RAN technology based on NVIDIA Corporation's (NVDA.US) Aerial RAN Computer platform from early evaluation to laboratory and field trial stages.
It is reported that the roster of partner operators announced this time has further expanded to include A1 Group, Chunghwa Telecom Co., Ltd Sponsored ADR, du, e&, Mobily, stc, TPG Telecom, and Saudi Arabia's Zain, among others, jointly building a vast commercial ecosystem together with previously announced partners such as Japan's NTT DOCOMO. Emma Falck, President of Nokia Oyj Sponsored ADR's Mobile Infrastructure business, said that the continued increase in service provider participation demonstrates that AI-RAN is moving from an industry concept to "commercial reality."
AI-RAN combines artificial intelligence with radio access network technology to optimize mobile networks' use of spectrum and computing resources. The platform combines Nokia Oyj Sponsored ADR's AI-native anyRAN software with NVIDIA Corporation's Aerial RAN Computer platform, is designed for 5G networks, and features a software upgrade path toward AI-native 6G evolution.
Nokia Oyj Sponsored ADR stated that the platform has achieved over 20% improvement in spectral efficiency, and the company has laid out a clear software evolution roadmap, expecting even greater efficiency breakthroughs between 2027 and 2028. The platform not only helps operators improve utilization of existing assets and build software-defined 5G networks, but also lays a solid foundation for future upgrades to AI-native 6G and deployment of AI workloads at the network edge.
Meanwhile, Nokia Oyj Sponsored ADR announced that its defense division has signed a memorandum of understanding with UK systems engineering and security services company C3IA to support the digital transformation of UK defense operations. The two companies plan to jointly develop solutions covering tactical and operational communications, private 4G and 5G, command and control, sensing, autonomous systems, and edge computing. The cooperation is also built on the two companies' joint participation in the UK Ministry of Defence's TacSys framework which provides access to Nokia Oyj Sponsored ADR's connectivity product portfolio for future tactical communications needs.
Mikko Viitaniemi, head of Nokia Oyj Sponsored ADR's defense business, said the cooperation aims to combine mission-critical connectivity capabilities with C3IA's expertise in defense systems engineering to advance tactical communications and interoperability in future UK projects.
