Hang Seng Indexes Company: AI-related stocks account for only 7% of Hong Kong stock market capitalization; thematic indices can be used to capture technology opportunities.
Taiwan, China's information technology weighting reaches 78%, South Korea 58%, mainland China and Japan 26% and 25% respectively, while Hong Kong stocks at 17% are at a relatively low level.
Hang Seng Indexes Company has released a research report on its flagship index series, analyzing the industry structure of the Hong Kong stock market, comparing differences in technology sector weightings across major Asia-Pacific markets, and highlighting the different use cases for broad-based indices versus thematic indices.
Data in the report show that as of the end of July 2026, the weighting of the information technology sector in the Hong Kong stock market rose to 17%, up a cumulative 6 percentage points over the past two years, driven mainly by the development of the artificial intelligence industry; AI-related stocks account for about 7% of total market capitalization, with roughly 200 AI-related names among the more than 2,400 main board stocks in the overall market. The Hong Kong stock market as a whole is dominated by three major sectors: financials, consumer discretionary, and information technology, with financials at a 31% weighting and consumer discretionary at 13%.
Compared with other Asia-Pacific markets, information technology weightings diverge markedly: Taiwan, China's information technology weighting reaches 78%, South Korea 58%, mainland China and Japan 26% and 25% respectively, while Hong Kong's 17% is at a relatively low level. The report notes that the higher a market's technology sector share, the typically larger the weighting of AI supply chain stocks, but a high degree of industry concentration can also push up market volatility; data show Hong Kong's annualized volatility is about 19%, while Taiwan, China and South Korea are at about 27% and 52% respectively.
The report explains that the Hang Seng Index, as a broad-based index, is positioned to reflect the overall performance of the Hong Kong stock market and does not focus on a single technology track. If investors wish to precisely capture technology and artificial intelligence investment opportunities in the Hong Kong market, they can choose targeted thematic indices, such as the Hang Seng TECH Index and the Hang Seng AI Theme Index. Among them, the Hang Seng AI Theme Index is highly concentrated by industry, with the information technology sector weighting exceeding 90%.
According to the company, Hang Seng Indexes Company has a complete Hang Seng technology-themed index series of 35 indices, covering the entire technology value chain including hardware and electronics, AI computing power, and automation Siasun Robot&Automation. Broad-based indices are suitable for capturing overall market trends; industry and thematic indices are used to capture structural opportunities in specific industries, and investors can choose the corresponding benchmark based on their own investment objectives.
