AstraZeneca's oral breast cancer medication has received approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
Astrazeneca PLC Sponsored ADR's oral medication for breast cancer has received approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Previously, the agency's advisory committee had voted against the drug, so this approval marks a victory for the pharmaceutical company. The drug, named camizestrant, was authorized through an accelerated approval process and can be used in combination with other cancer treatments for patients with genetically driven metastatic breast cancer. Astrazeneca PLC Sponsored ADR has stated that camizestrant, branded as Etcamah, is expected to generate over $5 billion in annual sales. However, Wall Street is not as optimistic: analysts surveyed currently estimate the drug's sales to be nearly $2.3 billion by 2032. Earlier this year, the FDA's Oncology Drug Advisory Committee voted against the drug, deciding that it did not provide meaningful benefit for patients. However, in the approval announcement on Friday, the agency stated that this medication will offer an additional treatment option for women with breast cancer. Etcamah functions as a hormone therapy by blocking estrogen from stimulating cancer cells, thereby helping to suppress their growth. The pharmaceutical company has confirmed that this oral medication can help delay disease progression by more than six months. The drug is intended for breast cancer patients who develop specific genetic mutations during endocrine therapy. Patients must undergo FDA-authorized testing to confirm they carry this mutation before receiving Etcamah treatment. Under the leadership of CEO Pascal Soriot, Astrazeneca PLC Sponsored ADR has launched several major cancer drugs. The company is aiming to consolidate sustained growth from its oncology portfolio while also actively positioning itself to compete in the exceptionally hot weight-loss drug market.
