Strategy Inc. (MSTR.US) has resumed Bitcoin purchases after a ten-week suspension, returning to its iconic accumulation strategy. Previously, the cryptocurrency bear market pressured the company's stock price, undermining market confidence in its financing model and prompting a restructuring of its balance sheet. According to regulatory filings submitted on Monday, the Bitcoin treasury company co-founded and led by Michael Saylor acquired approximately $369.7 million of Bitcoin during the week ending August 30. As the world's largest corporate Bitcoin buyer, Strategy also raised about $602.8 million for this purchase by issuing common stock and repurchased approximately $151.8 million of preferred stock.
The timing of Strategy's resumption of purchases aligns with a slight improvement in its financing model conditions. Bitcoin has rebounded to near the $80,000 mark, boosting Strategy's stock performance and pushing the company's market value closer to the value of its Bitcoin holdings. The company currently holds about $73 billion worth of Bitcoin.
At the same time, the company is continuing to reshape its balance sheet. Last week, Strategy established a separate cash pool in addition to its existing reserves, giving management greater flexibility to meet preferred stock dividend payments, debt repayments, and other operational needs. The two reserve pools total $5.1 billion and $1.61 billion, respectively.
Nevertheless, the extent of the recovery remains limited. Strategy's stock price is still far below the higher valuation levels seen earlier in this cycleat that time, issuing stock provided a more convenient way for the company to raise funds to purchase Bitcoin. While the recent rebound has shown some improvement, it has not yet restored the financing engine that previously underpinned its large-scale accumulation.
