After Cursor was acquired by SpaceX (SPCX.US), OpenAI announced the termination of cooperation citing Musk's "breach of contract history."
OpenAI announced that it will terminate its partnership with Cursor, as the AI programming tool has been acquired by SpaceX.
OpenAI announced that, due to the acquisition of the AI programming tool Cursor by SpaceX (SPCX.US), it will terminate its partnership with Cursor. OpenAI has notified SpaceX of its plan to discontinue the service of providing OpenAI models through Cursor on November 12, 2026, and has given the longest notice period allowed by contract in order to extend the time developers can use the relevant models through Cursor as much as possible.
In a statement released simultaneously on social media platform X and its official website, OpenAI said: We made this decision because, based on past experiences of violating contract terms with companies owned by Elon Musk, we cannot be certain that SpaceX will strictly adhere to our service terms when using the related technology.
The statement mentioned that companies owned by Musk have a history of breach: Twitter violated its contract with OpenAI after its acquisition; Musk admitted during sworn testimony this year that xAI had violated OpenAI's service terms, and xAI has now become part of SpaceX.
OpenAI stated that partnerships with major collaborators typically rely on customized contracts to ensure compliance and scalable security. The customized agreement with Cursor has left OpenAI with a limited time window to terminate the contract following the change in control. With the enhancement of AI capabilities, OpenAI has new accountability requirements for the forthcoming Astra model, leading to the decision to end the partnership at the latest allowable point in the contract and not provide future models to Cursor.
OpenAI expressed respect for its nearly four-year collaboration with Cursor, its team, its products, and the contributions made to the developer community, and it is prepared to support affected developers during the transition period.
