Autodesk, Inc. (ADSK.US) earnings report reveals "AI anxiety" among software stocks: Q3 and full-year profit guidance fall short of expectations, and the acquisition of MaintainX becomes a profit drag.
Autodesk announced its second quarter financial results for fiscal year 2027.
After the U.S. stock market closed on Thursday, Autodesk, Inc. (ADSK.US) released its second quarter financial report for fiscal year 2027. For the three months ending on July 31, the company reported revenue of $2.05 billion, a year-on-year increase of 16%, surpassing analyst expectations of $2.01 billion. Adjusted earnings per share reached $3.30, also well above the market expectation of $3.12. The GAAP operating profit margin improved by about 4 percentage points year-on-year to 29%, and the non-GAAP operating profit margin rose to 41%. Free cash flow soared by 24% to $561 million.
Q2 Earnings Report: Driven by both Architecture and Manufacturing, Performance Exceeds Expectations
In the second fiscal quarter ending July 31, Autodesk, Inc. exceeded market expectations across all core metrics:
Both revenue and EPS exceeded the guidance upper limit. Revenue from the AECO product family (Architecture, Engineering, Construction, and Operations) was $1.03 billion, an increase of 17% year-on-year; AutoCAD and AutoCAD LT revenue was $500 million, a growth of 14%; Manufacturing (MFG) revenue was $385 million, an increase of 15%. The growth rate in the Architecture business remained above 20%, with continued strong growth in Fusion products. The GAAP operating profit margin rose to 29%, expanding about 400 basis points year-on-year; the non-GAAP operating profit margin climbed to 41%, expanding 200 basis points year-on-year.
Earnings Guidance Falls Short of Expectations
Despite the impressive Q2 results, the stock price fell more than 5% in after-hours trading. The market's "punishment" focused on two areas:
First, the Q3 profit guidance is below expectations. Autodesk, Inc. expects Q3 revenue to be between $2.125 billion and $2.14 billion, with adjusted EPS only expected to be between $3.04 and $3.09. The midpoint EPS of $3.065 is significantly below the market's previous expectation of $3.14. The revenue guidance is above expectations, but the profit guidance is below expectations a typical sign of "cost eroding profits."
Second, the profit dilution caused by the MaintainX acquisition. The company completed its $3.6 billion all-cash acquisition of operations management software company MaintainX on August 3. Autodesk, Inc. CFO Janesh Moorjani stated that the full-year non-GAAP profit margin guidance remains unchanged, reflecting the higher potential profit margins from operational leverage being offset by the profit dilution caused by acquiring MaintainX. Investors are concerned that the integration costs from this acquisition will place continuous pressure on profits in the short term.
There are also concerns regarding the full-year guidance. The company has raised its full-year revenue guidance for fiscal 2027 from $8.16 billion - $8.22 billion to $8.295 billion - $8.345 billion; the billing amount guidance has been raised from $8.51 billion - $8.58 billion to $8.575 billion - $8.65 billion. However, the midpoint of the full-year adjusted EPS guidance of $12.52 - $12.60 is $12.56, which is below analysts' expectations of $12.60 despite the small gap, this is enough for the market to amplify negative signals against the backdrop of "AI disruption anxiety."
AI Anxiety in Software Stocks: General AI Tools are Disrupting Traditional Moats
The after-hours decline in Autodesk, Inc.'s stock price is not an isolated case. This year, the software sector has generally come under pressure due to investors' concerns that AI tools may disrupt traditional software business models. Peers like ServiceNow and Adobe have also experienced significant fluctuations.
The threat posed by AI is structural. Ever-more powerful general AI tools are believed to potentially disrupt or replace certain functionalities of specialized software, threatening the pricing power and customer stickiness of traditional SaaS companies. The market fears that if AI can automate professional tasks like architectural design and engineering drafting, Autodesk, Inc.'s core value will be eroded.
However, Autodesk, Inc. CEO Andrew Anagnost provided a different narrative: "The future of AI in the construction field will belong to trustworthy platforms that can combine the richest contextual information with the right models. Autodesk, Inc.'s unique advantage is that, through continuous data, contextual information, and experience flow, we integrate design, manufacturing, and operations."
The core logic of this judgment is that AI models themselves are merely tools, while the industry data and cross-lifecycle project intelligence accumulated by Autodesk, Inc. over decades is the real moat. In the era of AI, platforms that own data context will hold more lasting value than companies with the strongest single models.
Goldman Sachs Group, Inc. also noted when initiating coverage on Autodesk, Inc. on August 11, that MaintainX and AI further expand the company's long-term opportunities, with AI having the potential to strengthen Autodesk, Inc.'s platform and deepen its role in customer workflows. However, Goldman Sachs Group, Inc. also warned that uncertainties regarding the AI transformation in the software industry still exist.
The "Cost" of the $3.6 Billion Acquisition: MaintainX Becomes a Drag on Profits
The core of market concerns points to Autodesk, Inc.'s recently completed $3.6 billion cash acquisition of operations management software company MaintainX. This deal was finalized on August 3, with MaintainX expected to generate annual recurring revenue exceeding $135 million, marking Autodesk, Inc.'s strategic extension from traditional design software to asset lifecycle management. The company has officially established a new "Autodesk, Inc. Operations Solutions" business unit, extending its business scope from "Design" and "Manufacturing" to "Operations."
CFO Moorjani stated in the earnings call that the company has raised its full-year billing and revenue growth guidance to reflect higher potential growth expectations and the incremental contribution from MaintainX.
However, the integration costs from the acquisition are eroding profit margins. Autodesk, Inc. Chief Financial Officer Janesh Moorjani acknowledged in the earnings statement that the company has narrowed its free cash flow expectations for fiscal 2027, "reflecting the stronger potential growth expectations being offset by the operating and net financing costs of MaintainX," including about $45 million in transaction-related expenses.
Investors are concerned that while this acquisition opens up a closed loop of asset lifecycle management for Autodesk, Inc.'s AI strategy extending from "Design and Manufacturing" to "Operations Management," the short-term integration costs may continue to suppress profit performance. As Moorjani mentioned, the full-year non-GAAP profit margin expectation remains unchanged, indicating that the benefits from operational leverage and market optimization are offset by the profit dilution from MaintainX.
