National Bureau of Statistics: CPI rose by 0.5% year-on-year in July.
According to data from the National Bureau of Statistics, in July 2026, the national resident consumer price index rose by 0.5% year-on-year.
On August 9, the National Bureau of Statistics announced that in July 2026, the national consumer price index (CPI) for residents increased by 0.5% year-on-year. Among these, urban prices rose by 0.5%, while rural prices rose by 0.4%; food prices decreased by 1.5%, and non-food prices increased by 0.9%; consumer goods prices rose by 0.2%, and service prices rose by 0.7%. From January to July, the average national consumer prices rose by 0.9% compared to the same period last year. In July, the national consumer prices fell by 0.1% month-on-month. Specifically, urban prices fell by 0.1%, and rural prices fell by 0.2%; food prices remained stable, while non-food prices decreased by 0.1%; consumer goods prices dropped by 0.6%, and service prices increased by 0.4%.
I. Year-on-year changes in prices of various goods and services
In July, the prices of food, tobacco, alcohol, and dining out decreased by 0.8% year-on-year, contributing to a drop in the CPI of approximately 0.22 percentage points. Within food, the prices of livestock and poultry products fell by 6.0%, impacting the CPI by approximately 0.25 percentage points, with pork prices dropping by 13.3%; dairy prices fell by 1.5%, influencing the CPI by about 0.02 percentage points; fresh fruit prices decreased by 1.1%, affecting the CPI by around 0.02 percentage points; and egg prices rose by 14.4%, contributing to an increase in the CPI of about 0.07 percentage points.
Among the other seven major categories, six saw price increases and one saw a decrease. Prices for other goods and services, as well as healthcare, rose by 5.8% and 2.9% respectively. Prices for clothing and education, culture, and entertainment rose by 1.4% and 1.3% respectively. Prices for daily necessities and services, and transportation and communication increased by 0.8% and 0.4% respectively, while housing prices fell by 0.3%.
II. Month-on-month changes in prices of various goods and services
In July, the prices of food, tobacco, alcohol, and dining out remained stable month-on-month. Within food, prices for livestock and poultry products rose by 1.9%, contributing approximately 0.07 percentage points to the CPI increase, with pork prices rising by 4.1%; fresh vegetable prices rose by 1.3%, impacting the CPI by about 0.02 percentage points; fresh fruit prices decreased by 3.8%, contributing to a reduction in the CPI of about 0.07 percentage points; and egg prices fell by 1.7%, affecting the CPI decrease by approximately 0.01 percentage points.
Of the other seven major categories, three saw price increases, two remained stable, and two saw decreases. Prices for education, culture, and entertainment, healthcare, and daily necessities and services rose by 1.0%, 0.8%, and 0.4% respectively; housing and other goods and services remained unchanged; while prices for transportation and communication, and clothing fell by 2.2% and 0.4% respectively.
