CoreWeave (CRWV.US), an artificial intelligence (AI) and cloud computing company, is attempting to enter the Asian market and will establish its first data centers in the region to expand in this rapidly growing area of demand for computing power.
In a statement, CoreWeave announced plans to build three new data centers in Indonesia, with a total capacity of 360 megawatts. These data centers will cater to AI laboratories, startups, and large enterprise clients in Southeast Asia. The company expects these data centers to be operational by 2028 and added that it will invest billions of dollars into this project, though it did not disclose specific investment amounts.
Indonesia is gradually becoming an important hub for AI infrastructure development, driven by the rapid adoption of cloud computing applications, strengthened data localization regulations, and massive investments from U.S. tech giants like Amazon.com, Inc. (AMZN.US) and Microsoft Corporation (MSFT.US), which have committed billions of dollars to build related infrastructure.
According to Research and Markets, the data center market in Indonesia is expected to more than double, reaching $6.08 billion by 2031. In 2021, Amazon.com, Inc. pledged to invest $5 billion in Indonesia's AI and cloud infrastructure, while Microsoft Corporation plans to invest $1.7 billion by 2028. This investment is expected to create tens of thousands of jobs and further enhance Indonesia's position in the regional digital economy.
CoreWeave stated that it will form a local team in Indonesia to operate the new data centers, which will further drive the development of the local data center industry.
CoreWeave currently operates 49 data centers across North America and Europe, serving clients including OpenAI, Meta Platforms (META.US), and Microsoft Corporation. The company reported that it is currently utilizing more than 1 gigawatt of power capacity, with an additional 3.5 gigawatts already contracted. It is working to expand the scale of its data centers to meet market demand for increased access to NVIDIA Corporation (NVDA.US) AI chips while also selling higher-margin software and services to customers.
It is reported that CoreWeave's AI computing capacity has nearly sold out this year. The company is rapidly increasing capital investments and accelerating the construction of new data centers through financing schemes to bring them online. At the same time, it is also looking to broaden its client base beyond traditional tech companies.
