ASML's key supplier, Zeiss, has stated that it can meet the demand for critical artificial intelligence components.
Frank Rohmund, head of the Semiconductor Manufacturing Technology Department at Zeiss, stated during an interview that the company is confident it can meet the surging demand and has initiated a "real, long-term" capacity expansion project. This expansion not only concerns Zeiss's own performance growth but also directly determines the global capacity limit for the most advanced chip manufacturing. The German Zeiss Group, the world's sole manufacturer of extreme ultraviolet (EUV) lithography machines, is responding to widespread market concerns about supply chain bottlenecks for AI chips with a decisive capacity expansion and a technology roadmap spanning 15 years. Capacity Expansion: Building Foundations for Long-term Demand from Oberkochen to a Global Presence In the face of rising demand, investors had previously expressed widespread concerns that ASML Holding NV ADR and its supply chain (especially Zeiss) might hinder the overall development of the semiconductor industry due to capacity bottlenecks. In response, Rohmund clearly stated that the company is confident in its ability to meet the challenges ahead. With the exponential growth in demand for AI chips, Zeiss's semiconductor department has taken the lead in launching substantial capacity expansion efforts. According to Rohmund, Zeiss has expanded its headquarters in Oberkochen, Germany, to optimize existing space and increase production scale. At the same time, the department is constructing a brand new factory at another Zeiss location and has indicated that further expansion is possible if necessary. Rohmund stressed, "These are real, long-term projects regarding capacity expansion." This expansion directly addresses the core concerns of investors. There had been widespread market worry that as chip manufacturers like Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co., Ltd. Sponsored ADR, Intel Corporation, Samsung, and Micron raced to build chip production facilities, ASML Holding NV ADR and its key suppliers (like Zeiss) might struggle to keep pace. Zeiss's proactive capacity expansion aims to eliminate the risk of supply chain bottlenecks. At the same time, ASML Holding NV ADR itself is expanding capacity at a rare speed for the semiconductor equipment industry. Reports from April indicated that ASML Holding NV ADR expects to produce at least 60 EUV lithography machines in 2026, a substantial increase from 2025, with the next phase of annual capacity expected to further increase to at least 80 machines. To alleviate capacity bottlenecks, ASML Holding NV ADR has expanded cleanroom capacity in the United States, Germany, and South Korea and plans to build a new industrial park near its headquarters in the Netherlands. As its exclusive partner for optical components, Zeiss is a crucial link in this global capacity expansion network. This layout aligns closely with ASML Holding NV ADR's expansion plans. In July of this year, ASML Holding NV ADR announced plans to significantly increase its EUV lithography machine capacity to meet a substantial backlog of orders by 2028. The two companies expansion efforts are highly synchronized, demonstrating their strong confidence in long-term demand driven by AI. Technological Depth: From High NA to Hyper NA, Working Together on the EUV Roadmap The cooperation between Zeiss and ASML Holding NV ADR goes beyond meeting current demands, as both parties have identified a technological roadmap for the next decade. Currently, ASML Holding NV ADR ships its most advanced lithography machines with a High NA (0.55NA) optical system, achieving a resolution of 8nm. As early as June 2025, Jos Benschop, Senior Vice President of Technology at ASML Holding NV ADR, announced the joint launch of a development project with Zeiss for Hyper NA lithography machines capable of achieving 5nm resolution in a single exposure. The goal of this project is to further increase the numerical aperture (NA) to 0.7 or higher to meet industry demands by 2035 and beyond. Rohmund revealed that the two parties have developed a joint plan aimed at extending to around "2040." This means that, in the foreseeable future, Zeiss's optical systems will continue to define the ceiling for precision in chip manufacturing. Financial Engine: The Semiconductor Division has Become the Core of Group Growth EUV lithography machines are often dubbed the "printing machines" of modern semiconductor manufacturing, and the ultra-smooth mirrors provided by Zeiss serve as the "eye" of these machines. The manufacturing precision of these mirrors reaches atomic levels, and according to Zeiss, if their tilt angle were used to "redirect and aim a laser beam at the moon, it could even hit a ping pong ball on the moons surface." It is this extreme optical technology that has made Zeiss's components play a crucial role in about 80% of chip production worldwide. The strategic importance of Zeiss's semiconductor division is vividly reflected in its financial data. With the growing demand for computing power in AI large model training and inference, chip manufacturers are competing to purchase EUV equipment, directly driving up orders and revenue for Zeiss's semiconductor division. The strong performance of this division has also made it the largest contributor to Zeiss Group's total revenue of nearly 12 billion euros during the same period. Prior reports from German media noted that nearly one-third of Zeiss's annual turnover comes from its semiconductor business. Looking ahead, Rohmund expects significant growth in the companys performance this year, driven by investments from hyper-scale data center operators. In Zeiss's new five-year strategy, AI-driven digital transformation and data intelligence have been positioned as core themes. Despite the promising outlook, Zeiss, which has specialized in optics for nearly 180 years, maintains the characteristic prudence of German companies the cyclicality of the semiconductor industry cannot be ignored. Rohmund, a physicist who has worked at Zeiss for nearly 25 years, remains acutely aware of this. He cautioned, "Sooner or later, there will likely be some degree of adjustment." He added, "We are Germans, we are always very cautious, and we never easily become overly optimistic."
