Apple (AAPL.US) is gradually shaping a broader AI strategy through the integration of a series of tiny features into its entire software.
Notice that, while the complete revamp of Siri's artificial intelligence (AI) may have been the highlight news at Apple Inc.'s Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) earlier this month, Apple Inc.'s broader AI strategy is gradually taking shape through a series of small features embedded throughout its software. The company is not requiring consumers to adapt to a new AI-driven Siri to reap all the benefits AI brings, but rather integrating AI into the apps and services users are already using, focusing on solving real-world problems. As a result, the iPhone will be able to help users split restaurant bills, protect passwords after data breaches, automate tasks, and organize information with less manual work. Individually, these features may not be as eye-catching as a Siri that finally understands the user's personal context and takes action on their behalf. But collectively, they showcase a vision of AI that focuses less on conversing with AI assistants like Siasun Robot & Automation, and more on making Apple Inc.'s software itself feel smarter and more capable. Apart from Siri AI, here are some of the small AI features we are most looking forward to using in iOS 27. These features are currently available in the developer beta and will soon be rolled out to the public beta, followed by the official release of iOS 27 to the public later this fall. Split bills When iOS 27 launches later this fall, users will be able to use Apple Cash to split restaurant bills. With the support of Apple Intelligence, simply take a photo of the receipt (or upload a photo), and you will see a new option to split the bill with others. Apple Intelligence will automatically extract key details from the bill, such as items ordered and quantities, tips, and total amount. You can choose your own items from the receipt and then share the request with others by sending a message in a group chat. The option to split bills doesn't feel complicated, as it only appears when needed and can work seamlessly with existing apps and services that people are already familiar with (such as Messages and Apple Cash). It's smart enough to request each person to split the respective taxes and tips along with the item prices. Password updates Apple Inc.'s new password update feature will now leverage AI to act on behalf of the user by identifying weak passwords and those that have been compromised (such as those found in data breaches). This feature does not require users to manually update passwords, but can securely navigate and log into websites, upgrading the user's passwords to fresh, more secure versions. One-tap suggestions in Messages app If consumers thought the feature that automatically displays the necessary SMS verification code above the keyboard was one of the best features Apple Inc. ever introduced, they will love the new one-tap suggestions feature in iOS 27. Using Apple Intelligence, the Messages app will provide various one-tap suggestions based on the topic of the user's conversation. Similarly, this feature itself looks like a practical tool in chat, rather than a glaring AI-driven add-on. Call background information Another discreet option in iOS 27 will alleviate some of the pressure when calling company customer service departments, as it will show users the necessary information they may need to provide to the company representative answering the call. For example, if a user calls to inquire about their flight booking, the "call background information" feature will directly display the confirmation code on the call screen. To achieve this, the tool utilizes Apple Intelligence to extract information from emails in the Mail app, running entirely on the device to protect privacy. Importantly, this is a tool that operates in the background; it does not require the user to interact with an AI assistant to fetch information the necessary details will be displayed directly. Adding calendar events Apple Inc. now allows users to add or modify calendar events using only natural language descriptions, replicating functionality that third-party apps like Fantastical have had for years. Behind the scenes, Apple Intelligence extracts contacts and locations on behalf of the user and creates titles for events. This feature makes it easier to add content to Apple Inc.'s calendar without having to think about which field needs input. Vibe coding shortcuts As one of the most powerful apps on the iPhone, "Shortcuts" has often intimidated many users due to the technical barriers involved. The app allows users to write tasks and workflow scripts, creating automation to make life easier. But for non-advanced users, using Shortcuts can be frustrating as they have to seek online tutorials or other resources (like the Shortcuts Center) to find the tools they need. In iOS 27, users simply need to describe what they want their iPhone to do. "Shortcuts" can also perform other daily tasks, such as automatically sending a message to a partner with the estimated time of arrival (ETA) when leaving work, or turning on porch lights when a DoorDash order arrives. Reducing clutter in Smart Home app notifications Smart home users know how their apps often flood them with a bunch of unimportant notifications, all related to the same event. With Apple Intelligence in iOS 27, the "Home" app can understand multiple actions and how they are related, sending a single notification related to the overall activity. AI can also find the required video clips through search, such as package deliveries or other events. And the "Home" app will highlight noteworthy clips at the top of the screen for easy viewing. Safari tab organization Another not-so-obvious AI feature is the tab organizer in the Safari web browser. By using Apple Intelligence, Safari can now understand the content browsed on different websites and organize tabs into relevant topics. For example, if multiple tabs related to planning a trip are open, Safari can group all these tabs into a travel tab group. These will be displayed at the top of the browser, above the web pages, making it easy to access when ready to resume online research. Apple Inc. notes that the AI performing this task also respects user privacy, as it does not disclose browsing data to anyone (even Apple Inc. itself).
