OpenAI, Google, and Anthropic, the three giants, gathered at the G7 summit. AI governance and capital game are heating up simultaneously.
According to a list released by the French presidential palace, executives from artificial intelligence businesses such as Anthropic PBC, OpenAI, and Google's parent company Alphabet (GOOGL.US) will attend the G7 summit in France next week.
According to a list released by the French presidential palace, executives from the artificial intelligence business of Anthropic PBC, OpenAI, and Alphabet Inc. Class C, the parent company of Alphabet (GOOGL.US), will attend the G7 summit next week in France. The executives attending include Sam Altman from OpenAI, Demis Hassabis from Alphabet Inc. Class C, and Dario Amodei from Anthropic. All three companies have confirmed their participation.
Various national leaders have expressed interest in understanding the latest technology and its potential opportunities and risks. A spokesperson from OpenAI stated that the company plans to discuss relevant topics under the G7 framework, but did not disclose specifics. Anthropic and Alphabet Inc. Class C, apart from confirming the attendance of their executives, have not elaborated on their agendas.
This meeting signifies a rare occasion where the heads of top AI labs, who are usually fierce competitors, will come together to discuss common issues. Earlier this year, Amodei and Altman reportedly refused to shake hands on stage at an event hosted by the Indian government, reflecting the tense relationship between the two companies.
Currently, these pioneering AI companies are facing broader social concerns, including the potential job displacement caused by rapid advancements in AI technology. At the same time, OpenAI and Anthropic are under additional pressure to demonstrate the profitability of their business models ahead of their highly anticipated initial public offerings (IPOs).
On May 29, the G7 Digital Ministers' Meeting in Paris adopted a ministerial declaration, prioritizing "online child protection" as an international priority. The G7 countries agreed to advance online age verification mechanisms and called for digital services to embed child protection measures at the design stage. OpenAI confirmed that ensuring the safety of young people will be a top priority for Altman at the G7 summit.
The G7 ministers acknowledge in their declaration that AI may be misused by malicious actors, especially in areas like cyber attacks and chemical, biological, and radiological capabilities. Finance ministers also issued a joint statement on May 19, coordinating measures to counter misuse of advanced AI in cyber attacks, specifically mentioning the "Claude Mythos" model developed by Anthropic with powerful system vulnerability detection capabilities.
OpenAI is also presenting cutting-edge AI risk issues to governments, focusing on potential threats in the areas of cybersecurity and biotechnology. Major models are breaking technological boundaries at an astonishing pace, and these risks are not only technical issues but also require global regulatory coordination.
