Stellantis (STLA.US) is not currently expanding its collaboration with Jaguar Land Rover and Tata to Europe, but is betting on partnerships with Chinese companies and self-developed technology.
Stellantis currently has no plans to expand its cooperation with Jaguar Land Rover and Tata Motors in the European market. It is currently evaluating the technical solutions for Alfa Romeo's large car models and considering introducing niche Jeep models produced in cooperation with Dongfeng into Europe.
Stellantis (STLA.US) European Chief Executive Officer Emanuele Cappellano said on Friday that the group is not currently planning to expand the recent cooperation agreements with Jaguar Land Rover and Tata Motors to the European market.
Last month, the automotive giant announced a series of cooperation agreements as part of its new long-term strategy, including collaborations with Jaguar Land Rover for the U.S. market and Tata Motors for the Indian market. Analysts had previously speculated that these agreements may also support Stellantis in the European market. The group is currently assessing technical solutions for the European market, including the development of large vehicle models.
Cappellano stated clearly that expanding joint ventures with Jaguar Land Rover and Tata Motors to Europe is not a priority for the group. "When we designed these joint projects for the U.S. and Indian markets, we did not consider the European market," he said at a media briefing in Turin, where he also discussed the portion of Stellantis' recent business plan involving European operations. "If there are clear benefits in the future, such as suitable product opportunities, we may consider expanding into the European market, but currently this is not our focus."
Cappellano revealed earlier this week that Stellantis is exploring options to provide technical support for Alfa Romeo's future large vehicle models in Europe. Options include developing in-house or collaborating with external partners. Alfa Romeo plans to introduce two new mid-size models by 2030, but has suspended the specific release schedule for the next-generation versions of the Giulia sedan and Stelvio SUV.
Additionally, Cappellano stated on Friday that Stellantis is considering introducing a niche low-volume Jeep model produced by its Chinese joint venture partner Dongfeng Group in the European market. This month, Stellantis signed a $1.2 billion agreement with Dongfeng Group to manufacture Peugeot and Jeep branded models in China for domestic sales and exports. The two sides also announced a cooperation plan for the European market, including collaboration in manufacturing processes, which will be another Chinese partner project in Europe for Stellantis, in addition to its cooperation with Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer NIO outside of Europe.
