The Hong Kong government's Census and Statistics Department released the results of the monthly survey on the business conditions of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) for January 2026. The current trend index for SME business income fell from 44.9 in December 2025 to 43.4 in January 2026, while the outlook for business income in the next month (February 2026) is 46.4. By industry analysis, many industries covered in the survey showed a decrease in the current trend index for business income in January 2026 compared to the previous month, especially in the retail industry (from 42.1 to 38.4) and wholesale industry (from 44.3 to 40.7). The current trend index for new orders in the import and export trade industry decreased from 47.7 in December 2025 to 46.0 in January 2026, while the outlook for new orders in the next month (February 2026) is 47.1. A spokesperson for the Hong Kong government stated that the current and future trend indices for SME business income in January showed a slight decline after showing some improvements in the past few months. The current trend index for employment in SMEs in the same month also slightly decreased compared to the previous month. Looking ahead, the continued expansion of the Hong Kong economy should support the local business environment. However, the international environment remains complex, and the Hong Kong government will continue to closely monitor the situation.
