1) NVIDIA CEO Huang Renxun indicated that the company will participate in the new round of financing for OpenAI, but the investment amount will not come close to 100 billion US dollars. 2) NVIDIA had planned to invest as much as 100 billion US dollars in OpenAI, but earlier this week there were reports that the negotiations had stalled due to concerns within the company about the deal.
NVIDIA Corporation CEO Huang Renxun recently stated that the company will "definitely" participate in the new round of financing being conducted by OpenAI, but the investment amount is "unlikely to reach or approach" 100 billion U.S. dollars. On Saturday (January 31), Huang Renxun said in an interview, "We will definitely participate in the next round of financing, because it is a very good investment. We are very willing." Huang Renxun stated that OpenAI is one of the most influential companies of our time and the work they do is excellent. He also enjoys working with OpenAI CEO Sam Altman. Huang Renxun said that NVIDIA Corporation (NVDA.US) has not yet invested in OpenAI mainly because the latter is currently undergoing a new round of financing. He also pointed out that the company will definitely participate in the financing that OpenAI is currently undergoing. Huang Renxun did not disclose the specific investment amount, but he added that this investment is likely to be "the largest investment we have ever made." Huang Renxun's statement was mainly in response to a report on Friday (January 30) that NVIDIA Corporation's planned investment of up to 100 billion U.S. dollars in OpenAI had fallen through, and there might be cracks between the two companies. In September last year, NVIDIA Corporation signed a letter of intent with OpenAI to gradually invest up to 100 billion U.S. dollars in OpenAI for the construction of new data centers and other artificial intelligence infrastructure, with OpenAI using NVIDIA Corporation's hardware components. According to reports, the reason for the stalled negotiations was that some people within NVIDIA Corporation had expressed concerns about the deal. The report mentioned that the two parties are reevaluating their partnership, and one possibility is that NVIDIA Corporation will invest hundreds of billions of dollars in the current round of financing for OpenAI. In response, NVIDIA Corporation said, "For the past 10 years, we have been OpenAI's preferred partner. We look forward to continuing to work together." But the company did not disclose specific progress in the negotiations. The goal of this round of financing for OpenAI is to raise up to 100 billion U.S. dollars. On Thursday, there was news that Amazon.com, Inc. is also negotiating an investment of up to 500 billion U.S. dollars, and expanding a cooperation agreement to provide computing power services to this AI startup. NVIDIA Corporation has previously made several notable AI investments. Earlier this week, the company announced plans to make an additional investment of 2 billion U.S. dollars in CoreWeave, a cloud computing service provider and also a customer of theirs. However, such "circular transactions" (i.e. a company investing in its customers, and customers then buying its products) have raised concerns about the sustainability of the AI boom. Huang Renxun downplayed these criticisms. Regarding the CoreWeave transaction, he stated that such investments only make up a small part of the overall financing needs of the company, "to call this a circular transaction - this statement is absurd."
