On January 30, the Hong Kong Monetary Authority released the latest findings of the survey on negative equity residential mortgage loans at the end of the fourth quarter of 2025. The total amount of negative equity residential mortgage loans in Hong Kong at the end of the fourth quarter of 2025 decreased from HK$156.8 billion at the end of the third quarter of 2025 to HK$105.4 billion. The amount of unsecured portion in negative equity residential mortgage loans decreased from HK$10.9 billion at the end of the third quarter of 2025 to HK$6.2 billion at the end of the fourth quarter of 2025. The number of negative equity residential mortgage loans in Hong Kong at the end of the fourth quarter of 2025 was 21,304, compared to 31,449 at the end of the third quarter of 2025. These cases mainly involve housing mortgage loans for bank staff or mortgage insurance plan loans, and the loan-to-value ratios for these types of loans are generally higher. The ratio of negative equity residential mortgage loans in Hong Kong that are overdue for more than three months at the end of the fourth quarter of 2025 was 0.31%, which is slightly higher than the 0.24% at the end of the third quarter of 2025, but still remains at a low level.
