On January 30th, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology released the operating situation of the Internet and related services industry in 2025. The revenue of Internet businesses showed stable growth. The scale of Internet and related service enterprises in China (referred to as Internet enterprises below) achieved Internet business revenue of 2.0473 trillion yuan, an increase of 1.5% year-on-year, with a growth rate 0.5 percentage points higher than that of January to November.
The decrease in total profits narrowed. China's scale of Internet enterprises achieved a total profit of 154 billion yuan, a year-on-year decrease of 8.3%, with a decrease 3.4 percentage points narrower than that of January to November.
The growth rate of research and development (R&D) expenses slowed down. China's scale of Internet enterprises collectively invested 112.6 billion yuan in R&D expenses, an increase of 6.5% year-on-year, with a growth rate 0.2 percentage points lower than that of January to November.
In 2025, the internet business revenue in the eastern, central, western, and northeastern regions of China increased by 2.8%, -22.6%, 5.1%, and -20% respectively. The eastern region accounted for 88.9% of the national internet business revenue. The internet business revenue in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region increased by 8.7% year-on-year, while in the Yangtze River Delta region, it decreased by 3%. These two regions accounted for 34% and 33.1% of the national internet business revenue respectively. Beijing (8.9% growth), Guangdong (6.8% growth), Shanghai (10.8% decline), Zhejiang (12.4% growth), and Guizhou (14.6% growth) were the top 5 in internet business revenue nationwide.
Note: The caliber of large-scale Internet and related service enterprises refers to an annual Internet and related service income of 20 million yuan and above. All year-on-year growth rates in the text are calculated on a comparable basis.
