On January 23rd, the head of the Department of Circulation Development of the Ministry of Commerce talked about the development of China's wholesale and retail industry in 2025. According to data from the National Bureau of Statistics, in 2025, the value added of China's wholesale and retail industry reached 14.6 trillion yuan, a year-on-year growth of 5.0%, accounting for 10.4% of the GDP, reaching a historical high. Looking at the wholesale industry, in 2025, the Ministry of Commerce focused on the turnover growth of commodity markets, which increased by 3.6% year on year, and profit growth by 9.7% year on year. Among them, the turnover of industrial consumer goods markets increased by 9.1%. In terms of the retail industry, according to data from the National Bureau of Statistics, in 2025, China's retail sales of goods reached 44.3 trillion yuan, with a year-on-year growth of 3.8%, an increase of 0.6 percentage points compared to 2024. Among the retail units above the limit, the retail sales of convenience stores, supermarkets, specialty stores, and department stores increased by 5.5%, 4.3%, 2.6%, and 0.1% respectively, while the retail sales of warehouse member stores, collective stores, and unmanned stores maintained double-digit growth.
