Internet entrance steps into the AI era! Perplexity launches the mobile Comet AI browser, directly confronting Google.
Perplexity strives to completely innovate the way people browse the internet using AI browsers, promoting the entry of the internet into the era of artificial intelligence.
AI search leading platform Perplexity
AI has launched the mobile version of its AI-driven browser, Comet, extending the competition with Google to the super-dominant Android operating system of this search engine giant. Recently, OpenAI released its first AI-powered "AI web browser," marking a significant milestone in the internet era - the browser, which is the most iconic product of the internet age and the entry point for users to experience the internet, is becoming closely integrated with AI. The deep integration of browsers with AI will become a core direction for browser technology iteration.
This also means that this AI search leader and the developer of ChatGPT, valued at up to $50 billion, will engage in a new round of fierce competition with Google in the new battlefield of AI application ecology + search engine field.
Beejoli Shah, a spokesperson for Perplexity, stated that the AI-driven browser Comet is currently available on the Android platform, and the iOS application version for Apple Inc. devices is expected to be released "soon." She added that many wireless service providers and consumer electronics manufacturers have been requesting to include the Comet AI browser in their user experience ecosystem.
Comet AI browser was initially released in limited form in July and later widely launched for Mac and Windows desktop users in October. The browser features an all-round AI assistant that uses Perplexity's innovative AI large model-driven search engine to answer all user queries actively.
The AI assistant has the ability to summarize the core content of all open tabs and provide a positive and in-depth response to search queries related to websites users have opened. Additionally, it can perform tasks online on behalf of the users, who can directly give commands through text or voice instructions. However, Perplexity declined to disclose how many users are actively using this browser.
OpenAI, Google, and Perplexity stage an "AI Browser Three Kingdoms"
This AI startup has been working hard to integrate its AI assistant into more internet or smartphones mobile platforms and corresponding services, aiming to challenge Alphabet Inc.'s tech giant Google in its core expertise areas - search engine and Chrome browser, in the long term.
Other AI chat developers, such as Siasun Robot & Automation, have also actively embedded their innovative AI large model technology into browser products, with the latest example being OpenAI launching its Atlas AI browser product. Considering that 70% of internet traffic in recent years occurs on mobile consumer devices (according to Similarweb's statistics), AI developers and search engine companies are particularly eager to capture a larger share of mobile consumer smartphone traffic or occupy more user overall usage time on mobile.
With the launch of the Android version, Comet has made some adjustments in design for smaller mobile devices, but its functionality remains similar. Examples provided by Perplexity show that the AI assistant actively summarizes and compares user reviews of a smart refrigerator on online service websites such as Best Buy and checks if the product can be conveniently shipped to New York. Similar to the desktop version, the Comet app also has built-in ad blocking.
Perplexity's significant competitor in the AI browser field not only includes the existing leader in the online search field, Google. Another tech giant, Microsoft, has also integrated its Copilot AI personal assistant into both desktop and mobile versions of the Microsoft Edge browser over the past year. Last week, OpenAI executives stated that the company is actively exploring the final form of Atlas AI browser mobile version.
The AI browser named ChatGPT Atlas aims to provide a more personalized internet browsing experience and can handle tasks such as flight booking and document editing on behalf of users. Every time a user visits a website in the browser, they will see an option to "ask ChatGPT," which, when clicked, will pop up a sidebar for synchronous and in-depth AI interaction with the page content. For example, users can open a long article of movie reviews and then ask ChatGPT to summarize it; or find a recipe and let ChatGPT help complete the online ordering of various ingredients based on personal preferences.
"This is a completely AI-driven web browser built around ChatGPT," said OpenAI CEO Sam Altman in a live event. He emphasized that AI represents a rare and once-in-a-decade major technological opportunity that can make people rethink the way browsers are used.
In September, Google introduced its Gemini AI large model into its Chrome search browser and shortly after launched the mobile version. In addition to other regular search tasks, Google's AI can respond to any request, deeply analyze visited web pages, distill information between multiple tabs, and quickly retrieve previously closed websites.
Browsers transitioning from the internet era to the artificial intelligence era
In the "AI-native era," AI applications are no longer plugins or malicious add-ons but are default sidebars with user action entry on each webpage, allowing users to directly make the browser "understand and act for them." This is a leap from an "information window" to an "action workspace."
From Chrome introducing Gemini, Edge launching Copilot Mode, to OpenAI introducing Atlas, and the latest entry of Perplexity's Comet AI browser on mobile, at the "browser" internet entry point, it is evolving from a "pure internet contact portal" to an "AI-driven intelligent search entry," validating some Wall Street analysts' prediction regarding the early stages of transitioning from the internet era to the artificial intelligence era.
Not only is Perplexity AI starting to embed generative AI applications and AI smart bodies into browsers, but OpenAI and Google are also focusing on deeply embedding the ChatGPT AI family ecosystem and the Gemini AI large model system into the browser platform, such as in-page explanation, cross-tab refinement, finding closed websites, and summarizing pages instantly on Android; many AI startups focusing on "AI+ search" continue to update and iterate, constantly trying to turn web browsers into personalized AI assistants/agents. The emergence of AI browsers like Comet and Atlas undoubtedly makes this trend of AI browsers more mainstream and systematic.
Google's latest series of AI products based on Gemini 3 can be said to bring unprecedented "AI shock effects" to global users, inevitably leading to a massive demand for AI computing power, further confirming Wall Street's call for the early construction stage of AI heat when AI infrastructure is in short supply. Combining Warren Buffett's entry into Google and positioning it as one of Berkshire Hathaway's latest top ten holdings, the strong AI computing power combination brought by Google's GeminiAI ecosystem + Nvidia's index-level growth results undoubtedly further strengthens the narrative of the "AI bull market," effectively refuting some investors' anxiety about the "AI bubble moment" approaching.
