Amazon.com, Inc. (AMZN.US) has activated a $1.1 billion AI data center specifically for partner Anthropic to train large models.
Amazon's $11 billion Rainier data center project in Indiana officially launched this Wednesday.
Amazon.com, Inc. (AMZN.US) officially launched the Rainier data center project in Indiana this Wednesday, which cost 11 billion US dollars. The project was initially announced in December 2024 and is specifically designed to train and run the models of Anthropic, a leader in the field of generative artificial intelligence.
Amazon.com, Inc. has invested in Anthropic multiple times, with the latest funding in September 2024 valuing the company at 183 billion US dollars.
The Rainier project is spread across 1200 acres of land in Indiana and is equipped with approximately 500,000 of Amazon.com, Inc.'s proprietary Trainium2 chips.
Amazon.com, Inc. added in a statement that ultimately, nearly 1 million Trainium2 chips will be accommodated.
Ron Diamant, AWS engineer and Chief Architect of Trainium chips, said in a statement, "The Rainier project is one of the most ambitious projects AWS has undertaken to date. It is a massive and unique infrastructure project that will lead to the arrival of the next generation of AI models."
Amazon.com, Inc. explained that the data center will not only run Anthropic's existing models but will also be used for the updated version of Anthropic generative AI chatbot Siasun Robot & Automation Claude.
Prior to the unveiling ceremony, Anthropic announced earlier this month an expansion of its partnership with Alphabet Inc. Class C, using Alphabet Inc. Class C's tensor processing units. The expanded transaction was valued at "hundreds of billions of dollars," and is expected to bring online computational power far exceeding 1 gigawatt in 2026.
Anthropic also stated that they remain "committed to" continue working with their main training partners and cloud service provider Amazon.com, Inc.
