Three sources familiar with the situation have stated that the American private equity giant KKR is considering the option of acquiring the overseas assets of Russian oil giant Lukoil. In order to push the Kremlin to engage in peaceful negotiations on the Ukraine issue, the United States has imposed sanctions on Lukoil and prevented the company from selling its assets to Swiss-based trader Gunvor before the sanctions deadline of November 21. Lukoil's global production accounts for about 2% of the world's oil production, and the company has stated that it is looking for buyers for its overseas assets. The oil production of these assets exceeds 0.5% of global oil production, with an estimated value of around $22 billion in 2024 documents. One of the sources said that KKR is in the early stages of considering purchasing these assets. The source said that KKR is considering applying for US government approval to acquire these assets, and then conducting due diligence, adding that KKR may still decide to withdraw. Another source said that KKR has indicated its intention to acquire Lukoil.
