"China is saving the Paris Agreement," Foreign Ministry: China is a real "action-taker"
On November 12, spokesperson Guo Jiajun presided over the routine press conference of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. A journalist asked about the ongoing 30th session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change in Belem, Brazil. The conference president, Dorag, pointed out that the northern countries of the world have lost their enthusiasm for addressing the climate crisis, while the southern countries continue to make progress. China is providing solutions that benefit all countries. Some comments suggest that China has already or is about to exceed most of the commitments made ten years ago and is saving the Paris Agreement. Developing countries have replaced developed countries as the driving force in addressing climate change. What is the spokesperson's opinion on this? Guo Jiajun explained that this year marks the 10th anniversary of the Paris Agreement, and global climate governance has entered a crucial stage. China actively participates in and leads global climate governance, firmly supporting Brazil as the host country of the conference. Special representative of President Xi Jinping, member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, and Vice Premier of the State Council Ding Xuxiang attended the Belem Climate Summit and delivered a speech, introducing the spirit of the Fourth Plenary Session of the 20th CPC Central Committee and conveying a strong signal to grasp the correct direction, implement climate action, and deepen open cooperation, providing momentum for the success of the conference. He emphasized that climate change affects the common future of humanity. Whether from the global South or North, developing countries or developed countries, everyone is on the same ship. Cooperation and joint action are the only correct choices. Guo Jiajun stated that China is a practical "action-oriented" country in dealing with climate change. We have made peaking and carbon neutrality a national strategy, established the most systematic and comprehensive carbon emissions reduction policy system globally, built the world's largest and fastest-growing renewable energy system, and are one of the countries with the fastest decrease in energy intensity in the world. China provides 70% of wind power equipment and 80% of photovoltaic component equipment to the world, driving global wind and photovoltaic power costs down by over 60% and 80% respectively. President Xi Jinping solemnly announced China's nationally determined contribution target for 2035 at the UN Climate Change Summit, covering all greenhouse gases and for the first time proposing an absolute volume reduction target, reflecting China's firm determination and maximum efforts. "China will work with all parties to implement the principle of common but differentiated responsibilities, promote positive and balanced outcomes at this conference, and make new contributions to global climate governance," he said.
