From thermoses and soup pots to plates and tableware, the popularity of titanium household products continues to rise. These products often claim to have antibacterial, freshness-preserving, and food-activating effects, with various health-promoting concepts flooding the market. However, products bearing the same "titanium" label range in price from one or two hundred yuan to one or two thousand yuan, and ordinary consumers find it difficult to distinguish the authenticity of materials and the truth behind the marketing claims. Chang Hui, a professor at the College of Materials Science and Engineering at Nanjing Tech University, explained that inexpensive titanium products are likely titanium-plated or titanium-coated products, typically made of stainless steel or aluminum rather than titanium alloy or pure titanium, and are fundamentally different from solid pure titanium. "Because the coating's bonding strength with the substrate may not be consistent, or it may peel off. Once it peels off, the biggest risk is that some heavy metals will leach into the water cup or cookware, causing certain harm to human health." In their marketing, some merchants also claim that titanium cups can change the pH of water and produce hydrogen-rich water. Experts say that scientifically speaking, these are all gimmicks with no scientific basis. Experts say that selling titanium-plated products as pure titanium and exaggerating health benefits is suspected of false advertising and, in serious cases, constitutes consumer fraud. When live-stream promotions and product page claims are inconsistent, e-commerce platforms must also bear corresponding responsibility.
