Within just a few weeks, three proposed listings related to AI infrastructure have been canceled, suspended, or delayed, private valuations have been set below previous targets, and some debt markets have even begun to price in genuine distress. Together, these signs indicate that investors who once funded AI buildouts almost without question are becoming more selective. SK Hynix canceled the U.S. listing plan for its subsidiary Solidigm, an IPO originally intended to fund a new wafer fab in the United States. In addition, earlier this month, Australian data center operator Firmus Grid canceled a nearly $5 billion IPO, citing market volatility. A few days later, Blackstone-backed Airtrunk postponed its planned Singapore listing to the first half of next year. Interest rates are rising, with the Federal Reserve resuming rate hikes in September and the Bank of Japan having pushed its policy rate to a 31-year high. Higher rates make financing more costly for projects whose revenue will not arrive until years after spending. Geopolitical risks are also mounting, as the Iran war keeps oil prices elevated and inflation expectations high. And as AI spending scales up, investors are paying closer attention to when it will deliver returns.
